SAVE THE DATE!

On Friday 20 November, we’re taking to the streets to commemorate Trans Day of Remembrance and demand an end to the violence, hatred and discrimination faced by trans people. But we’re also making this a Reclaim the Night march.

Too many Women, Trans individuals and LGBTQ+ people are told to change how we dress, where we go, who we are and what time we come home because of the threat of violence. The Cornell 7 case in the US is the latest example of how gender violence is dismissed or played down.

We refuse to accept streets and campuses where women and LGBTQ+ people have to walk home looking over their shoulders; where trans people are being targeted with abuse and violence. We refuse to accept a society where cuts to youth services, refuges, public transport, housing and support services make people less safe.

It isn’t our behaviour that needs changing, it’s the system that perpetuates and thrives on gender violence - capitalism. So mark the date in your diaries and calendars, and join us on 20 November to fight for our liberation!

Join us to protest Reform’s flag ban and opposition to Pride!

4.30pm, Wednesday 16 September, Huddersfield Town Hall

Last week, the new Reform council banned the flying of all but pre-approved flags from being flown from council buildings. This comes after a summer in which certain council employees attempted to put numerous obstacles in the way of a Pride march going ahead on 4 July. Despite their attempts, Alternative Pride went ahead with a march, which brought 250 people out onto the streets in support of the LGBTQ+ community.

Alternative Pride said at the time that attacks from the new Reform council would be on the horizon, and this is their opening salvo. We cannot take this lying down - we must get out onto the streets and organise. On Wednesday 16 September, Alternative Pride will be joining the protest called by the People’s Alliance for Change and Equality outside the first Reform council meeting. We need you out with us. Only by bringing together all the different communities under attack by Reform and the far right will we be able to beat back their bigotry and racism. We call on all socialists, trade unionists and activists to join us outside Huddersfield Town Hall!

On 4 July, over 250 of us came together
to march around Huddersfield in defiance
of the attacks on the LGBTQ+ community
after pressure from Kirklees Council to
not go ahead with a march.

Despite this, the mood was positive and
determined. Since then, we now have a
Reform-controlled council, after the
Tories voted for them to lead the council.
This means that the attacks on our
community, and the wider working class,
are set to increase.

Reform in Calderdale have banned the
use of Pride flags. In Wakefield, they have
removed funding for school uniforms. We
cannot take any attack on the community
of Huddersfield lying down. And we won’t.

This Saturday, Alternative Pride will be
hosting an organising meeting, to discuss
plans and events for the next few months.
We should not wait for the attacks to
come before we begin organising. We
must organise now. Join us.

As many will know, the 'official' Pride march in Huddersfield on 4 July had to be cancelled due to barriers put in the way of the march going ahead. The costs that the council were enforcing on the organising committee ran into the thousands, and were way beyond the legal responsibilities to organise a march.

Alternative Pride chose to go ahead with the march - we felt that Pride should not seek nor wish to get approval from the council to march.

We were inundated with calls and emails to pressure us onto not going ahead with the march. Today we wanted to ask the elected councillors why council staff were doing this in their name. We also wanted to ask them why the council had been putting these non-legal barriers in the way of the original march

Despite submitting the deputation to the council, the unelected Chief Executive of the council, Steve Mawson, prevented any questions being put to the councillors, or for the statement on what had been happening to be read out.

This, by the way, is the same Chief Executive who recently signed contracts finalising the privatisation of the last two council-run dementia care homes in Kirklees. Oh, and he's paid £175,000 a year to do this as well.

WE DID IT!!

Over 250 of us came out today to commemorate the q***r community that organised 1981 Pride against police oppression and brutality. But today we also struggle for our trans siblings, who, under the ECHR guidance are facing social exclusion. We must oppose any plans to implement the guidance, using our allies in the trade union movement as the organised sections of the working class.

But we cannot just limit ourselves to defensive actions. With the rise of the far and populist fight, we need to fight q***rphobia with solidarity, struggle and socialism. We need a system that supports the majority, not just the super-rich.
