Hedge Cutting Co-operative

Membership forms for the ‘Hulland Ward Hedge Cutting Cooperative' were circulated in June, with the first cut scheduled for mid-July. So far 20 households, plus the telephone exchange, have signed up stretching between Dog Lane and Moss Lane. Please remember the state of the hedges backing on to the Main Road remains the responsibility of individual householders – this service is organised by the Parish Council, but paid for by members of the cooperative, to assist in keeping pavements clear for pedestrians.

☀️BIN COLLECTION UPDATE ☀️

With high temperatures forecast this week, the waste & recycling crews will start collections from 6:00am, beginning tomorrow (Tuesday).

What this means for residents:
• Please put your bin out the night before, or before 6:00am on your collection day.
• If you’re waiting for a missed bin, leave it out – crews may arrive earlier than usual.
• Please help us spread the word to friends, family, and neighbours, especially those not on social media.

Looking out for our crews:
While we all enjoy the sunshine, working in extreme heat can be challenging and potentially dangerous for our collection teams. Starting earlier helps keep them safe.

If you would like to show your appreciation, a small gesture such as offering a cold drink or an ice lolly on a hot day would be hugely appreciated by the crews – it really does make a difference!

Hot weather tip:
Please remember to keep your bins cleaned and washed out, as heat can quickly cause unpleasant smells.

Dedication of an oak tree to King Charles III

Last autumn an oak tree was planted on the patch of grass at the corner of Ashes Avenue overlooking the playing fields.

The tree is doing well and today (20th June) is the king’s official birthday which seems like a good opportunity to unveil a plaque dedicating the tree to our king. There was an open invitation to participate but only a small turn out at 10am to unveil the plaque which reads:
"The Coronation of King Charles III
Crowned at Westminster Abbey, London
6th May 2023
"May this oak grow strong and tall, a lasting memory of an historic day."

The District Council has identified the potential sites it proposes for new housing development in its new Local Plan. These will show how the District intends to meet Government targets for new homes in the Dales, which have more than doubled since the existing Plan was published in 2017.

The proposed Spatial Development Strategy and sites for new housing development are due to be discussed at a meeting of the District Council’s Local Plan Committee which takes place in the Town Hall, Matlock on 13 May 2026 at 18:00. Members of the public and communities are encouraged to read and view online the documents that are going to be discussed.

For background, in autumn 2024, central Government set a grossly increased housing requirement for the Derbyshire Dales. Until then, our work on a Local Plan had been about meeting local needs, not national requirements. For our Local Plan to pass Government inspection under the new system, we will be expected to have allocated as many housing sites as possible. The Inspector is likely to reject a plan that does not include sites that could be conditioned to be acceptable. That would leave us without an up-to-date Local Plan and the unrestricted opportunity for developers in the Dales would be extended.

Our Annual Parish Council Meeting will take place next Monday 11 May starting at the earlier time of 6.30 pm. This meeting will include an Open Forum with questions/discussions with Cllr Peter O'Brien, Chair of the Derbyshire Dales Local Plan Sub Committee regarding proposed development in Hulland Ward. The link to the agenda is below:

They are then replaced by the minutes of the meeting which are available to read between one to two weeks after a council meeting. Minutes are initially published in draft form before being approved at the next council meeting.

We know that many residents are concerned about the planning development proposals for Hulland Ward that have been put forward by the District Council. We have invited the Chair of the District Council Planning Sub-Committee to attend our Parish Council meeting on Monday 11 May at 6.30 pm, this meeting is open to all members of the community.

Prior to that meeting the Parish Council will be forming a PC sub-committee to formulate questions and concerns, this meeting will be on Thursday 30 April at 7 pm in the small meeting room at the Village Hall.
