Setterplay

Setterplay We are a friendly and family-run play equipment, shelter and canopy supplier specialising in the edu Follow us if you love play time!

Setter Play has manufactured play equipment, outdoor classrooms and canopies from North Hertfordshire and Central Bedfordshire for the past 25 years. The company started when our Managing Director, Jonathan, put his woodwork skills to the test to provide a back-garden play area for his children. With that first playground a resounding success amongst the kids in the neighbourhood, Setter Play was

formed and we haven’t looked back since. When word about Setter spread amongst schools and private customers alike, we went to British Standard to ensure we complied with the highest of standards. With that confirmed, Setter Play began to distribute and build our equipment nationwide. From supplying private and LEA schools, to country parks, to corporate shelters for Go Ape, our bespoke and custom services means we have happy customers across the country. In the time since our founding we have developed our understanding of what both children and adults really want from a playground. We have developed play ranges that break the traditions of conventional playgrounds in order to provide real excitement for kids, as well as equipment that serves to help develop children’s decision-making, risk-taking, and fine motor skills. We have always done our bit to support the local economy; 70% of our suppliers operate within 10 miles of our base, and we have always employed locally. We also reinvest in charitable causes, from kit-sponsorship for local rugby teams to regularly donating towards community events. We have just turned 25 years old, and are currently in a very exciting growth phase.

Really lovely to be invited to Sheerhatch Primary School's grand opening of their EYFS play area, installed by Setter Play late last year. Fortunately there was a break in the hail for their pupils to run and play!

Other than the laughter, joy and excitement, a particular highlight was talking with Mrs Kipling, their EYFS lead, about the ways in which their new play area helps with delivery of the curriculum, and the multifunctional ways in which their pupils and teachers can use the space. The multi-layered design elements in EYFS play areas in particular are always interesting to consider; it's not just about 'fun', but about how their youngest pupils are going to learn, develop, and start their school journey.

A lovely project to be a part of, right on our doorstep.

Setter Play is a family-run business, originating in the mid 90’s when Jonathan built his son Aleks a climbing frame in the back garden, to burn his energy in a productive way rather than bouncing off the walls!

Aleks now leads Setter with the same passion and enthusiasm he had for play equipment as he did back then, when it all started.

Being a family-run business means that we care deeply about all of our projects, and take pride in our continued and well-documented dependability, and the high-standard of our designs and installations.

If your playground needs a refresh, why not contact our wonderfully friendly team for a free consultation?

Three key considerations when planning your play area project in 2026:

1) Space and Flow: consider how your children will use the area? A considered layout boosts safety as well as excitement!

2) Age Range and Inclusivity: if you’re building a play area for the whole school, choose equipment that supports different abilities and developmental stages. If you’re considering a playground for a classroom or year group, we can advise on what key factors you need to consider to complement the curriculum.

3) Safety Standards and Surfacing: all of our designs comply with the relevant safety standards, but the most suitable safety surfacing can depend on the environment (and your budget!).

We're in the news! Our bespoke climbing frame for Weston Colville Parish Council helped to reflect their local history, with a RAF airfield nearby. A fun juxtaposition 😆 & a great spark for role-play games.

"Peter McDonald, lead cabinet member for economic development for South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC), said the project was "one of the best examples" of projects in the area" - high praise for our design, manufacture and installation teams, that has put a smile on everyone's face this morning.

It is close to RAF Wratting Common, where Lancaster bombers regularly flew during World War Two.

Big news: Setter Play turns 28 today! 🥳

Some quick maths shows over 1 million children have played on our play equipment over the past 28 years 🤯

Here are some pictures of our favourite projects from the last year to mark the occasion.

We've had some great news in the past few weeks that has shaped the next year of business, so it really feels like we're going from strength to strength.

We're also celebrating by signing off a huge play project for a parish council in Oxfordshire, which has just wrapped up this week.

Thanks for following us on this journey, and here's to many more years!
