A more proactive approach to ownerless land is helping turn forgotten sites into places with real community value.

In this guest blog, David Stewart, Head of Policy at the King’s and Lord Treasurer’s Remembrancer, explores how the Proactive Bona Vacantia Project is identifying ownerless sites that could support regeneration and public benefit.

That approach is already making a difference, including at Riddochill Road in West Lothian, where transferred land has enabled the development of social housing.

We regularly speak with land agents, community representatives, NGOs, landowners, developers and others about the challenges around land decision-making in Scotland.

A consistent theme from these conversations is the importance of trust, active listening and making space for constructive conversation between people with different experiences and perspectives.

Our latest blog reflects on why that matters. The blog explores how stronger relationships and more open dialogue could help create better decisions and uncover more shared ground across complex issues.
