We regulate and promote crofting in Scotland, creating a successful crofting system that positively Crofts range in size with an average croft being 5ha.

Crofting is a system of landholding which is unique to Scotland. A croft is relatively small agricultural land holding which is normally held in tenancy. The Crofting Commission is working to secure the future of crofting by creating and promoting a well regulated crofting system that positively contributes to the sustainability of rural communities. The Commission is a Non-Departmental Public Bod

y (NDPB) which operates on a day to day basis independently of the Scottish Government, but for which Scottish Ministers are ultimately responsible.

🚜 Duties of a crofter

Cultivation can include horticulture, husbandry, keeping or breeding livestock, poultry or bees, growing fruit and vegetables, planting trees, or using land as woodland.

There are many ways to keep a croft in active use.
