Next was planking. We replaced 4 full length planks either side and one short end at the stem. This was done in Khaya Mahogany. The planking on this boat is 3/4" thick. Very chunky for a boat this side. They were tricky to get to steam into place.

Next on Myself was the stem and stern assembly. Both ends had interesting joints.

Mystery - 1905 Kidby built skiff.
One of this winter's jobs was to put a new bottom into this lovely little boat. This started with removing the old keel, patterning and making a new one. The keel in these boats have a very interesting garboard rebate. We made sure to take accurate patterns of the old keel and copy exactly. I believe it's very important to keep these little details when rebuilding historical boats like this otherwise the skills and techniques will be lost.

More photos to come.

I've never drawn out a dinghy before so I'm excited to see how it all works. Definitely not a necessary step but hopefully it might help the building process.

It's now more important than ever to get young people involved and interested in our maritime world. If you talk to anyone in this sector they will all say the same thing. There are not enough young people interested in pursuing a maritime career. There are now very few of the knowledgeable and experienced older generation to hand over their skills. Time is running out and once we've lost these skills they are gone forever. However, I believe the tide is now turning and with the support of organisations like EAMA, we have a bright future ahead.

The East Anglian Maritime Awards are very important to recognise and celebrate the talent of our amazing maritime community. They are now open to nominations for this year's awards scheme and are awarding bersuries as well. This is a great opportunity to acknowledge the work and dedication of the amazingly talented people around you. Please go and check out the website for more information.
