September is Preparedness month!

As part of the WaysUK campaign, today's theme is all about being ready for a power cut.

Power cuts can happen unexpectedly due to severe weather, infrastructure faults, or accidental damage to power lines. While many outages are short, some can last longer and affect heating, lighting, communications, and food storage.

Today's challenge is simple: check that you have a working torch in an easy-to-reach place, spare batteries available, and a charged power bank ready to use if needed.

Remember to save 105 in your phone to report a power cut and check in on neighbours, friends, and relatives who may need extra support.

Today, Suffolk County Council's Cabinet saw first-hand a trial of the innovative JCB Pothole Pro, as part of a new commitment to put Suffolk communities first.

Designed to cut, crop and clean potholes in as little as eight minutes, the specialist machine could help deliver faster, longer-lasting repairs across the county.

This is just one of many commitments within the County Council's new plan to transform how it works, putting the needs of Suffolk communities at the heart of everything it does.

We’re consulting on proposed changes to School Nursing, Health Visiting and support for young parents - helping services continue to focus on prevention, early help and safeguarding, while making sure families can access the right support from the wider network of services when they need it.

👩‍👧‍👦 Families invited to get moving at Suffolk in Motion travel experience day 🚗

Residents are invited to discover new ways to travel around Suffolk at a free family-friendly event taking place this autumn.

Suffolk in Motion will be held on Saturday 10 October, from 10am to 3pm, at the London Road (Copdock) Park and Ride, offering visitors the chance to explore a range of transport options available across the county.

Delivered by Suffolk County Council in partnership with Believ and Urban Fox, the event will showcase sustainable and affordable ways to travel, helping people to make informed choices about how they get around Suffolk.

The day will feature a range of interactive activities and displays for all ages, including:

🚲 Balance bikes for younger children
⭐ A stamp trail around the event
🏎️ Pedal-powered Scalextric racing
👩‍⚕️ Pre-bookable bike health checks with the Bike Doctor
🚶‍♀️‍➡️ Information about local walking groups and wellbeing walks
🪫 Test drives and displays of new and used electric vehicles (EVs)
🚲 Opportunities to try out e-bikes
⚡ Advice from local EV owners on charging, running costs and ownership
🚗 Information on local pay-as-you-go electric car clubs

Everyone attending will also be entered into a free draw, with many prizes including a signed Ipswich Town FC shirt and an afternoon tea for two.

Councillor Morgan Brobyn, Suffolk County Council's Cabinet Member for Food, Waste and Rural Affairs, said:

"Getting around Suffolk is something we all do every day, but many people might not realise the options available to them.

"I think one of the best things about Suffolk in Motion is that it isn't about telling people how they should travel. It's about giving residents the chance to explore what's available and decide what works best for them.

"I invite families to come along, have some fun and try things out for themselves. You can chat to people who already use electric vehicles, have a go on an e-bike, get your bike checked over, or simply pick up ideas that could make getting around a little easier or cheaper.

"There's plenty for everyone, so whether you're curious about a different way to travel or just looking for a good day out, come along, have a chat with the experts, and maybe even discover an option you hadn't considered before."

With transport playing a vital role in everyday life, Suffolk in Motion aims to help residents explore options that could save money, improve wellbeing and support a variety of travel choices.
