๐Ÿ“ข REMINDER: NO FIRES OR BBQS IN CHILL WOOD

This summer has seen some of the worst UK wildfires in years. A significant blaze has torn through ancient pine and broadleaf forest in the Cairngorms, heath and grassland in Suffolk have suffered devastating fires, and fires have swept through woodland and marshland in Essex.

These fires are a stark reminder of just how fragile our green spaces are, and how quickly they can be lost.

The ancient woodland in Chill Wood took centuries to grow. A single spark from a BBQ or fire can spread fast in dry conditions, destroying the vital habitat that birds, insects, reptiles and small mammals depend on.

โš ๏ธ Please continue to enjoy Chill Wood, but do not start a fire or use a BBQ when visiting - these are prohibited in Chill Wood. If you spot a fire, call 999 straight away.

๐ŸŒณ Let's keep this woodland here for the next generation.

๐Ÿ” Sunday species spotting in the woods ๐Ÿ”Ž

Last weekend we hosted Chill Wood's first-ever bioblitz, as part of the City Nature Challenge. In this event, cities from around the world compete to map the most species onto the iNaturalist app, and our team of 12 volunteers did their bit for Bristol ๐Ÿ’ช

David Hanks of Frampton Cotterell Parish Council led us on the trail of a huge range of biodiversity, including:

๐ŸŒฟ Edible and medicinal plants
๐ŸŒธ Ancient woodland indicator flowers
๐Ÿชฒ Superhero composting beetles
๐Ÿชœ Cave-clinging climbers

Check the photos in this post for a small selection of the species we found. If you go down to the woods this bank holiday, why not download iNaturalist and see what you can see?

๐Ÿ“ข We are excited to invite you to join us for a free guided nature walk and bioblitz around Chill Wood! ๐ŸŒณ

David Hanks, Frampton Cotterell Parish Councilโ€™s Nature Officer, will be guiding us around Chill Wood to observe and record plants, animals and fungi ๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ›๐ŸŒท๐Ÿ›๐Ÿ„

๐Ÿ“Š Our walk is part of the City Nature Challenge, an annual global event that brings together communities, scientists and land managers to document the wild species living in and around our cities. The aim is simple but powerful: by finding and recording the nature around us, we can better study and protect it.

๐Ÿ—“ We will meet at 10am at Tubbs Bottom Dam on Sunday 26th April.

๐ŸŒ Every sighting counts, and together we will be contributing Chill Woodโ€™s wildlife to a worldwide dataset. We look forward to seeing you there!

๐ŸŽ‰ Exciting News!! ๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ›

has launched its latest citizen-science survey on which birds visit greenspacesโ€ฆ and Chill Wood is on the project map! ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐Ÿ“ Sign up to their Birds in Greenspaces survey at https://www.bto.org/greenspaces

๐ŸŒณ Visit Chill Wood and other local greenspaces listed on the project map, then simply record which birds you see and how many!

๐Ÿ’ซ Data collected by you will help the BTO understand just how important greenspaces are for birds, and people, shaping future management practices.

This interactive survey is open to ALL skill levels and ages - so get out there and help us show off this amazing habitat! โ˜€๏ธ
