A huge well done to Glassary Primary School! 🏆

Our young people from Glassary recently travelled to Oban to take part in the STEMovators “Construct a Crane” competition, and what an experience it was!

Using only materials they could find around their school, they designed and built working cranes that had to lift everything from teabags to tins of beans (and even bottles of water!) from the floor to a table landing zone.

It wasn’t easy, there was lots of trial and error, problem solving, and a mix of emotions along the way. But the teamwork and determination really paid off!

After a busy day of competing, meeting judges and taking part in other STEM challenges
we were absolutely delighted to hear Glassary named as the winners! 🎉

We’re so proud of their creativity, resilience and teamwork, and we can’t wait to see what they take on next. Well done to everyone involved!👏

A few highlights from yesterday's Community Services Committee...

đŸ«‚MCR Pathways Impact Report - The Council continues to support young people through its partnership with MCR Pathways, a mentoring programme helping care-experienced and vulnerable pupils build confidence, improve wellbeing and achieve positive futures. Since launching in 2023, the programme has expanded across secondary schools, supporting hundreds of young people through one-to-one mentoring and group activities. The latest report highlights strong positive outcomes, including increased confidence, clearer career aspirations and high rates of young people moving on to further education, training or employment. This work plays a key role in supporting young people to reach their full potential and in meeting the Council’s commitment to ‘Keep the Promise’. đŸ«Tobermory Campus update - Plans were approved to launch a consultation to seek views on relocating Tobermory 2–18 Campus to a new purpose-built school, supported by Scottish Government funding, to improve the learning environment for children and young people. The current building is rated as poor in terms of suitability, and the proposed new campus would provide modern, more accessible facilities with improved space for learning and activities. This report sets out the proposal and seeks approval to begin a formal public consultation later this year, giving pupils, parents, staff and the wider community the opportunity to share their views before any final decision is made. 📚Education Service Review update - The Council is working to improve education services following an independent review, and this report sets out a planned, long-term programme of improvements to take shape over the next few years. It highlights where we are so far, including early progress on strengthening support for children with additional needs, expanding subject choice, improving school buildings, and ensuring fair staffing across schools. It also outlines the careful steps ahead, with work already underway and ongoing oversight in place. Ultimately, this is about making sure every child and young person feels supported, included, and able to achieve their very best, while continuing to strengthen how we work together across schools, families and communities.

We’re really proud to be working with MCR Pathways, with their programme now supporting young people in 9 of our secondary schools.

If you’ve got just an hour to spare each week, you could make a real difference too. Becoming a mentor doesn’t need any special qualifications, just a bit of time, kindness, and a willingness to listen.

There's something special happening across Gigha and Islay...🌊

Our young people are stepping forward to champion their local seas, working alongside the Hebridean Whale and Wildlife Trust to discover, understand and care for the marine life around them🐬

By bringing together schools, local knowledge and community voices, this work is a lovely reminder of what can be achieved when we work together and how powerful that can be for the next generation.

Thank you to for bringing this opportunity to our young people on Gigha and Islay!

Would having everything in one place make managing communication with your child’s school easier?

If so, ParentsPortal could help. From signing permission slips and reporting absences to keeping up to date with school events, it’s all there when you need it.

If you’re still unsure, you can find more about the benefits in the post below 👇

Pupils from Tarbert Academy are currently taking part in a fantastic collaborative visit with Dunbar Grammar School and Forfar Academy, made possible through our QUAD partnership with other local authorities.

This experience gives our young people the chance to work alongside pupils from different schools, build confidence, share ideas and form new connections. At the same time, it reflects the strong collaboration taking place between teachers, school leaders and central teams across our partner authorities, all working together to support the best outcomes for our learners.

A brilliant opportunity for our young people and a great example of partnership in action 👏
