Strong Start to the Week Across Multiple Projects:

Great to see real progress on the Blessed Carlo Acutis School for Willmott Dixon, where we’ve been applying Sherwin-Williams FX2 Series and Acrolon 7300 on all perimeter steels, with internal steels coated using FX1 Series.

It’s been a busy few days on site:

✅ Monday – Our package was selected for the Willmott Dixon National Quality Audit, earning a very good score. A great recognition of the team’s attention to detail.

✅ Tuesday – We passed a FIRAS audit and operative assessment on the intumescent paint works with no issues raised. Excellent outcome.

✅ Wednesday – Another FIRAS audit, this time on pe*******on seals at the Temple Quarter Project in Bristol for Sir Robert McAlpine — again, no issues reported.

Massive thanks to the teams on both sites for delivering to such a high standard. Quality and compliance are at the heart of everything we do.

🔒 Understanding Smoke Seals: Small Details, Big Protection 🔥

At Sharpfibre, we're committed to protecting life and property through expertly designed passive fire protection systems. One critical—but often overlooked—element in effective fire safety? Smoke seals.

Smoke is the leading cause of death in building fires, and maintaining effective compartmentation relies heavily on selecting the right type of seal for every application. Here’s a quick guide to the most common types:
✅ Brush Seals – Flexible nylon bristles that help restrict smoke while allowing minimal airflow. Ideal for irregular gaps and door perimeters.
✅ Blade Seals – Rubber or PVC fins that form a tight seal against smoke and sound. Commonly used on fire doors.
✅ Intumescent Seals – Expand when exposed to heat, sealing off gaps to block fire and hot gases. Best used in combination with cold smoke seals.
✅ Drop-Down Seals – Automatically deploy when a door closes, sealing the bottom gap to stop smoke infiltration.
✅ Compression Seals – Rubber or foam-based seals that provide a continuous contact seal for enhanced insulation against smoke and noise.
✅ Combination Seals – Integrate both cold smoke and intumescent technology to provide all-in-one protection.

Choosing the right seal isn't just about ticking compliance boxes—it's about saving lives, protecting assets, and supporting effective evacuation in emergencies.

At Sharpfibre, we design, supply, and install certified systems that perform when it matters most.

BS9999 requires a threshold gap of no more than 3mm. The threshold gap can be reduced by the use of the appropriate device called a drop-down seal mechanism. Unfortunately, some of the doors are installed incorrectly and the threshold gaps are above the permitted by the manufacturer maximum.

Before installing a door set, ensure that it has been manufactured with an undercut that is suitable for the final floor finish. Remember, fire door installation is as critical as the door’s specification itself. Prioritize safety, follow guidelines, and ensure that fire doors are installed correctly to protect lives and property.
