Rewilding Bio Diversity Projects
We have had an update from Ed Galley,Dylan Brown and Barbara Rhodes on the projects the Micklefield PC is involved with in the village.
High Biodiversity and community fruit and veg sites around the village
The majority of work undertaken to establish the following sites has been funded by grants from Banks Renewables, Ridge Road Energy, Woodland Trust, Network Rail, Tesco, Soil Association amongst others.
Established High Biodiversity sites:-
7 verge wildflower sites along Church Lane
3 verge wildflower sites on Great North Road between Oldfield Close and Church Lane
2 large wildflower sites on Garden Village Banking opposite the sandwich shop
Wildflowers, bluebells and wildlife edible hedging established under the trees on the western border of the school grounds
Wildflower Meadow next to the MUGA on the recreation ground
Mixed wildlife edible hedge on the west side of the wildflower meadow, dividing the wildflower meadow from the rest of the recreation ground.
Copse of mixed tree whips planted along the north edge of the recreation ground. (some losses due to drought that will be replaced this autumn)
Wildflowers and shrubs planted below the north side station car park. Bug refuge developed under the trees in this area.
Community fruit, vegetable and herbs sites established
A number of sites have been established to provide free produce for anyone in the village to use.
Large planter in front of the school providing herbs and vegetables, also involved with School gardening club
A number of planters alongside the road up to the north side station car park providing herbs and vegetable
Apple, pear, plum trees, raspberry, gooseberry, current bushes, rhubarb etc planted alongside the road up to the north station car park
Apple, pear and plum trees planted next to the wildflower meadow in the recreation ground.
Going forward
We are looking to increase the wildflower sites across the village this autumn and spring
We will extend the copse along the north side of the rec
We are looking for a grant to buy bird boxes (particularly swift and house martin) to offer to householders in the village
The Parish Council would like to thank Ed, Dylan, Barbara and all the other volunteers who have put the projects together and for all their hard work in bringing them to fruition.
