With warm temperatures set to continue throughout the week, we kindly ask all visitors to take extra care while enjoying their visit. ☀️

There are plenty of places across Harewood to stay cool and enjoy some shade. Whether you're exploring the House or strolling through the Gardens and Grounds, you'll find lots of spots to escape the heat.

Please remember to apply sunscreen regularly and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. If you need a break from the heat, the Courtyard and Terrace Cafés provide shaded seating and indoor spaces to rest alongside cold drinks.

From tiny courgette seedlings emerging from the soil and runner beans twirling their way up canes, to rhubarb pushing through its forcing pots and wildflowers bursting into bloom, it's a wonderful time to visit the Walled Garden at Harewood. 🌱🌸

Originally built in stages from the 1750s, the Walled Garden reached its horticultural heyday in the 1890s. After lying dormant for decades, the original kitchen garden of 2 ½ acres was revived in the 1990s by Harewood House Trust and brought back into full production.

Today, it remains the oldest garden under cultivation at Harewood and predates the building of the House.

Wander through productive vegetable beds, heritage fruit trees, fragrant herbs and vibrant flower borders, enjoy the season and find a little gardening inspiration.

Have you ever noticed the chairs in the Entrance Hall of Harewood House? 🪑

Designed by Thomas Chippendale, these elegant hall chairs reflect the collaborative vision of Harewood. Chippendale incorporated decorative details inspired by Robert Adam’s scheme for the Hall including Greek key patterns roundels and swags. As was traditional for hall chairs, the frame is adorned with the Lascelles family crest, a muzzled bear.

It is a set of eight created for the space with their primary function to provide seating for servants or visitors while maintaining a formal and decorative presence in the entryway.

Who was Cecil Beaton?

One of Britain’s most influential photographers, Cecil Beaton helped define the glamour and style of the 20th century. Known for his striking portraits of celebrities, aristocrats and the “Bright Young Things”, he combined photography with theatrical imagination and elaborate staging.

Beyond the camera, Beaton was an award-winning costume and set designer, winning three Oscars for his work on Gigi (1958) and My Fair Lady (1965). In 1968, a major retrospective of his portraits became the first photography exhibition held by the National Portrait Gallery.

In this self-portrait Beaton indulges in the theatrical fantasy of dressing-up, taken at the Opera Ball at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, in 1933. The use of a 10-second timer release enabled him to capture his own likeness throughout his career, constantly refashioning and reinventing himself in front of the camera.

Longing to break free from his ordinary middle-class background, he wrote: 'I don’t want people to know me as I really am but as I’m trying and pretending to be.'

One of the most celebrated pieces of Thomas Chippendale furniture in the world, the Diana and Minerva commode has stood at Harewood since 1773. 🪑

Created for the State Dressing Room and delivered at a cost of £86, this extraordinary dressing commode reflects the craftsmanship, artistry and global connections of the 18th century. Named after the Roman goddesses Diana and Minerva, whose figures appear in striking darkwood roundels, the piece is richly decorated with intricate marquetry and veneers sourced from across the British Empire.

Tomorrow, we'll be opening the commode for our 12pm daily talk, offering a rare opportunity to explore its hidden features and learn more about the stories, materials and craftsmanship behind this remarkable object.

A masterpiece of design, artistry and history, the Diana and Minerva commode continues to captivate visitors more than 250 years after its arrival at Harewood.

Between 16 - 18 June, either parts or the whole of the House State Floor will be closed due to private filming. 📽️

Servants' Hall, Old Kitchen and Terrace Cafe will be open as normal. Gardens and Grounds tickets available to buy online now.

Income from this private filming will contribute to the £4.5 million needed by our charity every year to protect and develop Harewood, to keep it open for future generations.

When it comes to the big screen, Harewood is far from camera-shy. You might have spotted us in the 2019 Downton Abbey film or HBO/BBC’s Gentleman Jack.

Our estate has also appeared in feature films, period dramas, fashion shoots, and music videos as well as Range Rover Sport advert.
