We can’t wait to welcome you to Harewood 40, celebrating 40 years of Harewood House Trust and its mission to protect, preserve and share Harewood for generations to come. To mark the occasion, we’ve brought back our 1986 ticket prices of £1.50 and £3.50, and they’ve all sold out!

As we’re expecting a busy weekend, we kindly ask for your patience, especially during peak periods and when queues form. Please follow our friendly team’s guidance; they’re always on hand to help make your visit enjoyable. 💙

This Black History Month, we’re reflecting on the story of George ‘Bertie’ Robinson, who became the first (and only) Black member of staff to enter service at Harewood House.

Born on the island of St Vincent in 1879, Bertie entered the employment of the 5th Earl and Countess of Harewood while they were visiting the four plantations they owned in Barbados. The exact circumstances are unknown, but leaving his family to travel to England would have been a significant decision, reflecting the hardships experienced by Caribbean families living with the legacy of slavery and colonialism.

As a footman, Bertie would have served meals, attended to the family and their guests, and accompanied them on their travels. His duties may also have included cleaning boots, polishing silverware and carrying coal. Like other servants, he would have worked long days with little time off. Footmen at Harewood earned approximately £15 a year in the late 19th century, around £2,000 today. Bertie sent part of his wages to support his family in St Vincent.

This photograph of Bertie was taken in a professional photographer’s studio in London. Like many ‘cabinet’ photographs, it was probably taken to be given to family or friends, often for display in the home. Documentary records show that Bertie did send photographs home to St Vincent, as well as mount them in Christmas cards.

Harewood House Trust worked with Leeds-based DSRG (the Diasporian Stories Research Group) to bring the story of George ‘Bertie’ Robinson, to life in the exhibition Bertie Robinson: The Footman from St Vincent.

As Cecil Beaton: Changing Icons comes to a close this weekend, we’re reflecting on Beaton’s enduring legacy. 📷️

His groundbreaking style transformed portrait and fashion photography, reshaping how we see celebrity, fame and identity. His theatrical approach continues to influence photographers today, from David Bailey and Mario Testino to Annie Leibovitz and Tim Walker.

Beaton’s fascination with dressing-up, self-presentation and playful rejection of gender norms also challenged conventions and helped create space for q***r expression in British art and culture. Yet his work often promoted a narrow, elitist ideal of beauty, one that does not reflect the diversity of modern Britain. While his contribution to
visual culture remains significant, photographers today
question and challenge his legacy.

For example, at Harewood, this legacy is explored through the Missing Portraits series, which addresses gaps in our historic portrait collection. Newly commissioned works celebrate individuals of African Caribbean heritage connected to Harewood, including actor and writer David Harewood by artist .

Also in the exhibition is a collection of Vogue covers, including Hanna Moon’s striking 2021 Vogue portrait of Gemma Chan, which channels Beaton’s theatrical style while celebrating an Asian creative team.
