Statement from Reform U.K in Leeds
We strongly condemn the Green Party’s recent declaration that “Zionism is racism.”
It is deeply disturbing to hear political rhetoric that echoes language used by the National Front in the 1970s. That history should teach us exactly where the demonisation of Zionism and the denial of Jewish national self-determination can lead. To hear similar rhetoric being repeated by a mainstream political party today is sickening.
This is particularly concerning at a time when the Jewish community is already living with fear and heightened anxiety following last year’s deadly terrorist attack, and with the recent revelation of a terrorist attack being planned for Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
Words matter. When a political movement tells Jewish people that the belief that Jews have a right to a national homeland is inherently racist, it risks placing an even greater target on a community that is already facing unacceptable levels of antisemitism.
Let me be absolutely clear:
Reform in Leeds stands with the Jewish community — in Leeds, across the UK and around the world.
We believe Jewish people have the same right to national self-determination as every other people. We believe Jews are entitled to have a homeland, and that homeland is Israel.
That does not mean every action of the Israeli government must be supported or beyond criticism. Governments, including Israel’s, can and should be held accountable for their actions.
But opposing a government is not the same as denying an entire people their right to a homeland.
We will not stand by while antisemitic ideas are repackaged as political slogans.
The Jewish community should never have to live in fear because of who they are, what they believe, or where their homeland is.
Reform in Leeds will continue to stand firmly against antisemitism and alongside our Jewish neighbours.
