Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service We provide a Fire and Rescue Service to safeguard over one million people every day. This includes a visit by a fire crew or their support staff to your home.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) provides a fire and rescue service to safeguard almost one million people every day, across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, to make our communities safer places to live, work and visit. There are twenty strategically located fire and rescue stations within Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Each fire and rescue station is equipped and crewed

to enable effective delivery of not only emergency services in your times of greatest need but also to undertake a great deal of prevention and education within the community in which they serve. The area within which your fire and rescue station is situated will determine the prevention and education work that is undertaken. Fire and rescue stations may focus on forging links with potential partner organisations and associations in targeting the identified vulnerable members of the community in relation to reducing domestic fires and their devastating consequences. Similar partnerships will also be sought to reduce road traffic collisions, given that ten people a day lose their lives on our roads. Industrial risks are also encompassed in the stations’ daily routines in operational planning and prevention work. Regardless of the risks on the fire and rescue station’s patch, firefighters will be undertaking home fire safety checks. The visit will take approximately 30 minutes and is free of charge. The crews will discuss with you how to prevent a fire from starting in your home and what to do if one does start. Various topics are covered which includes kitchen safety, where 66% of fires occur, how to plan your escape if a fire was to occur, what to do at bedtime, how and when to maintain and test your smoke detectors, and in some cases we will even install ten year, single point, smoke detectors free of charge if deemed necessary. Just in case you wondered what else firefighters may be doing when they are not fighting fires, rescuing casualties and working to prevent fires and accidents through education and planning, then you may see them training, maintaining and testing equipment to ensure that they remain in a constant state of readiness ensuring that they exercise professionalism in their role when called upon. Our service is delivered from the fire and rescue stations www.leics-fire.gov.uk/your-fire-service/who-we-are/locations-and-contacts, supported by Service Headquarters www.leics-fire.gov.uk/contact-us, a dedicated Training and Development Centre, Stores and Workshops. In addition to the operational personnel, we employ support staff who carry out key functions in Occupational Health and Safety, Finance, Human Resources, Administrative Support, Corporate Services, Fleet Management, Property Maintenance, Information and Communication Services and Information Technology. Our command and control suite deals with about 27,000 calls each year resulting in an average of 15,000 actual emergency incidents each year. The Fire and Rescue Service is managed on behalf of the Combined Fire Authority - www.leics-fire.gov.uk/your-fire-service/who-we-are/combined-fire-authority - by the Chief Fire and Rescue Officer. He is supported by Directors responsible for Community Safety, Organisational Development, Corporate Resources and Finance and Corporate Risk.

This week is Drowning Prevention Week. It's vital that children learn water safety from a young age, so we've made a new water safety video for primary schools with Everyone Active at Waterfield Leisure Centre.

Our Community Safety team will be sending it out to local schools soon. They'll also be out at Watermead Country Park parkrun this time next week for a special water safety awareness event, along with representatives from the RNLI, the Royal Life Saving Society, Swim England and Swim With Jo, giving water safety tips to people of all ages - hope to see you there!

All our Fire Stations make sure they're connected and engaged with their local communities, and if they have the time will provide visits to give safety talks and reassure the public. Here, crews from Melton Mowbray Fire Station met with senior citizens at Wilton Manor.

Follow your local Fire Station on Facebook for the latest incidents, events and safety advice for your local area.

With World Cup '26 kicking off this evening and more late matches throughout the tournament, you may be planning on going out, and staying out, later than usual.

Please be sensible and enjoy the World Cup responsibly, especially if you're driving. Tiredness, alcohol and drugs will all impair your ability. Don't risk your life and livelihood - get a lift home instead https://leics-fire.gov.uk/road-safety

Are you a carer? Does the person you care for live in a high-rise building?

This week is Carer's Week, and this year's theme is Building Carer-Friendly Communities.

Did you know there have been recent changes to regulations in England which will impact people who would have difficulties evacuating high-rise accommodation by themselves? These new regulations are meant to improve fire safety and evacuation for such people.

If you think the person you care for could be affected by these changes, please read more here: https://orlo.uk/nqguL

Water rescue training continues, with Birstall Station and Loughborough Station crews taking the plunge earlier this week.

With so many tragic drowning incidents around the UK in recent weeks, and with more warm weather expected over the summer, it's vital that our Firefighters are as prepared as they can be to respond to water emergencies as quickly and efficiently as possible.

You can do your bit by not going in open water, and knowing what to do if you see someone in trouble.

We'd also really urge you, if you haven't already, to download What3Words on your smartphone - because whether you spot a person in danger in open water, or a wildfire in a field, or you're out in the countryside and become injured or trapped yourself, having this useful free app will help the emergency services locate and reach you as quickly as they can: https://what3words.com/

Some more great footage of our crews at Riverside Festival over the weekend, engaging with and advising members of the public, and where off-duty staff took part in (and won!) the Dragon Boat Race.

Thanks to everyone who spoke to us, and to Graham Nelson for his photography.

Our crews had a successful weekend at Riverside Festival in Leicester, meeting lots of people and giving fire and water safety advice and conducting water rescue demonstrations in the River Soar to teach people what to do in an emergency (If you're in the water - float to live! If you're on the shore, dial 999, tell the person to float on their back and throw them a line, and DO NOT enter the water yourself)...
.. oh, and our team (who were all off-duty, of course) came first in the Dragon Boat Race - GET IN!

Ahem. Anyway, thank you to Leicester City Council for another well-run festival, and hope to see you again next year! https://orlo.uk/6LUla
