Helping Chris cross the finish line 🏆

We recently shared a story of regular swimmer, Chris, who was rescued by the team after having a cardiac arrest in Braunstone Leisure Centre's main pool. When catching up with Chris, we also learned that he was in the middle of a 44-mile charity swim for Dementia UK (the equivalent of swimming the English Channel twice). ❤️

Chris was just 7 miles (448 lengths) short of his goal when the incident happened. So last week, we asked customers at Braunstone Leisure Centre to help him cross the finish line by logging their pool lengths.

You completely blew us away, logging a total of 5,156! This included a first ever length from one of our young customers Betsy. 🏊

A huge thank you to everyone who took part to support Chris and a wonderful cause! 👏

Active Leicester is collecting spare smartphones to support , helping individuals escaping domestic abuse stay safe and connected.

For someone fleeing a dangerous situation, a working phone is an essential lifeline. If you have an unused, working smartphone:
➡️ Reset it to factory settings.
➡️ Drop it off at your nearest Active Leicester leisure centre.

Regular customer, Chris, returns to Braunstone Leisure Centre after recovering from a cardiac arrest whilst swimming ❤️

On Sunday 17 May, one of our regular customers, Chris suffered a cardiac arrest and stopped breathing whilst swimming in the Main Pool. The team on duty quickly rescued Chris from the water, administered CPR and applied three shocks via a defibrillator. This lead to Chris recommencing breathing before paramedics took over and transported him to Glenfield Hospital.

Last month, the team were then invited to Town Hall to receive an Honoured Citizen Award from Lord Mayor Kulwinder Singh Johal and Councillor Dr Sue Barton.

After being in regular contact with Chris since his incident, the team were delighted to welcome him back to site for the first time, for an emotional visit to meet the team and give his thanks. It was brilliant to see Chris looking so well and we are incredibly proud of the team (Gavin, Lydia, Owen, Benas, Khaled and Krish) for their response on the day and saving Chris' life.

We look forward to seeing Chris back swimming again more regularly in the near future.
