What started as a simple way to keep busy during retirement has grown into a deeply rewarding experience for 72-year-old Colin Dutton, whose quiet dedication as a volunteer has brought comfort and companionship to countless end-of-life patients at Aintree University Hospital 💙

This National Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June) we spoke to him about the importance of his role and what his seven years as a volunteer have taught him.

“Unfortunately, a lot of our elderly patients don’t have family, or their relatives live some distance from the hospital meaning that they are without their loved ones when they pass away. Most of the time, patients that I support are asleep, but I still talk and play music to them as I know hearing is the last remaining sense that they possess before they pass. I never want a patient to feel like they're alone so, when possible, I place my hand on their arm when talking to them.” 🫶

Colin is one of 172 volunteers at Aintree who take on a variety of roles from wayfinding and chaplaincy support, to the end-of-life companionship service.

About volunteering, Colin said: “I like being able to help people in their final moments. Being an end-of-life companion has taught me that there is more good in the world than bad. Families and staff are always complimentary and welcoming and my intention is to carry on volunteering at Aintree in the years to come.” ☺️

We are delighted to share that our Liverpool Pulmonary Rehabilitation service, which provides the Breathe Programme at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH), has achieved national accreditation.

The Breathe Programme is an eight-week long exercise and education rehabilitation programme for people in Liverpool who have long term lung conditions such as COPD, bronchiectasis, pulmonary fibrosis or asthma.

The accreditation was awarded by the Royal College of Physicians, which assessed services to ensure they have demonstrated and met best practice standards such as quality, safety, patient experience and workforce.

It provides further reassurance for LHCH patients, and their families, that the team are providing the highest quality service possible, whilst also following the recommended guidance for pulmonary rehabilitation services across the country.

You can read more on the news pages of the LHCH Website.

On this day ten years ago, we celebrated the official opening of Cherry Ward by Sir Bruce Keogh, former National Medical Director at NHS England. Cherry Ward is a ten-bed facility at LHCH dedicated for the care and treatment of people with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). LHCH provides specialist adult CF services for Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales and further afield.

CF is a serious, inherited genetic condition that causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs and digestive system. The re-developed environment in Cherry Ward, unveiled in 2016, ensured the ward was fully in line with national guidance providing individual side rooms, ensuite facilities, a comfortable seating area with a modern ‘home from home’ feel.

Read more about Cherry Ward and this ten year milestone on the news section of our website.
