Merseyside TUSC Next TUSC Branch Meeting Saturday 3 February 2018 10am to 1130am at The Casa, 29 Hope Street, Liverpool. L1 9BQ

Next Branch Meeting Saturday 4th November 2017, 10am to 11.30am at The Casa, 29 Hope Street Liverpool L1 9BQ - All Welcome. All TUSC councillors will:
● Oppose all cuts to council jobs, services, pay and conditions – we reject the claim that ‘some cuts’ are necessary to our services.
● Support all workers’ struggles against the cuts, privatisation and the government’s policy of making ordinary peo

ple pay for the crisis caused by the bankers and the bosses.
● Reject increases in council tax, rent and service charges to compensate for government cuts.
● Defend the national collective bargaining arrangements for council workers.
● Vote against the privatisation of council jobs and services, or the transfer of council services to ‘social enterprises’ or ‘arms-length’ management organisations, which are first steps to privatisation.
● Oppose racism and fascism and stand up for equality for all.
● Use all the legal powers available to councils, including powers to refer local NHS decisions, initiate referenda and organise public commissions and consultations, to oppose both the cuts and government polices which centrally impose the transfer of public services to private bodies.
● Campaign for the introduction of a Living Wage above and beyond the minimum wage for all council employees and those working for council contractors.
● When faced with government cuts to council funding, councils should refuse to implement the cuts. We will support councils which in the first instance use their reserves and prudential borrowing powers to avoid passing them on – while arguing that the best way to mobilise the mass campaign that is necessary to defeat the cuts is to set a budget that meets the needs of the local community and demands that the government makes up the shortfall.
● Support action against climate change and for a future where sustainability comes before profit. This page published & promoted by Roy Farrar 17 Church Avenue, L9 4SG

Over eighty workers are taking strike action at Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport as the employer insists on holding wage rises below the rate of inflation. These workers are members of the GMB union and provide essential services like aviation rescue and fire-fighting, the control room, engineering and driver operations and airport bird control. The employer, Liverpool Airport Limited, seems to want a trial of strength with the union by insulting the workforce.

The company initially offered a 2% pay rise, when the RPI measure of inflation is more like twice that. The GMB union dropped its claim from 3.6% to a 3% rise, but the employer instead offered a one-off payment of £150 and 2.25% Workers responded with a huge vote for action and more strikes will take place on 19 and 26 September, with eight further dates to be named in October. Strikes are from 7am to 7pm and we urge all local trade unionists and socialists to visit the strikers and wish them well.

TUSC stands across ‘city region’, responds to Tory “move on” slurs

Anti-austerity socialist party the Trade Unionist & Socialist Coalition is fielding seven candidates across Merseyside as part of a targeted national challenge in this year’s local elections. TUSC is standing in seats to highlight its anti-austerity policies, particularly on Merseyside in relation to the Merseyrail guards and the cuts to local public services.

TUSC candidates are standing against several Labour councillor members of the Transport Committee which voted to remove the guards from the trains, including West Derby ward in Liverpool and Halton Brook ward in Runcorn/Halton.

Responding to the Tory slurs about Liverpool needing to move on from the 1980s, TUSC candidate Roger Bannister for Liverpool Kirkdale said:

“The Tories have got a cheek telling us to move on from the 1980s when their party devastated areas like Merseyside, when their government now is trying to return us to the 1930s! I am proud to have played a role in the 1980s when Liverpool’s socialist council stood up to the Tory government, and I believe we need councillors willing to do so now, when we face an even greater assault on what’s left of our public services, housing, NHS, and so on.
“It’s quite clear that the overwhelming majority of Labour councillors have no intention of standing up to Teresa May, in fact more of them seem willing to attack their own leader Jeremy Corbyn than to resist the Tory government! That’s why I and my colleagues in TUSC are standing in selected seats at this May’s elections.”

TUSC candidates are as follows:

Halton, Halton Brook, Ste Armstrong, local assembly line operator, anti-tolls campaigner and Unite the Union rep, standing against Labour cllr John Stockton a leading member of the Transport Committee

Knowsley, Shevington, Neill Dunne, local taxi driver who gained over 10% of the vote last time standing for the first time, in a two-horse race against Labour incumbent

Liverpool, Kirkdale, Roger Bannister, lifelong trade unionist, stood previously for mayor and city region mayor as well as Kirkdale ward. Labour constituency secretary for Militant-supporting Labour MP Terry Fields during the 1980s.

Liverpool, West Derby, Ann Walsh, lifelong trade unionist, standing against Labour cllr Pam Thomas of the Transport Committee

Wirral, Bidston & St James, Warwick Roberts, RMT union rep for Merseyrail guards, recently on strike

Wirral, Rock Ferry, Mark Hazlehurst, taxi driver and Unite the Union branch equalities officer

Wirral, Upton, John Murray, postal worker and health & safety rep for Communication Workers’ Union
