Not only is today Fathers Day it is the morning after the day before!
A day that started at 3am when the alarm went off and 6 Weston Coasties started a journey that they will never forget.
At 04:31, as the sun rose in Minster on Sea on the Isle of Sheepy, our 3 heroes, Cheryl, Matt, Craig and team friend Dan put the pedal down and set off, the event was Chase the Sun 2026! The plan is to set off at sunrise in Minster and arrive at the Grand Pier, Weston super Mare before sunset, a trip of over 200 miles in around 9 hrs with organised pit stops!
Initially is doesn’t sound so bad but when your body is saying ‘quit’ and ‘I’m broken’, you have to blank the thoughts and the pain and keep pushing on! By mile 2 they were feeling a little better!🤣.
All in there were over 1200 riders taking part and if you are one, CONGRATULATIONS!!
If you know one, give them a MASSIVE HUG, they’ve earned it!!
We met some lovely people, we made people smile and we cheered for complete strangers.
Matt had made a spreadsheet with stops planned along the route at between 20 and 50 mile intervals depending on suitability. Waiting for them at those stops and negotiating some lovely countryside were Beth, Josh and Jeff in the support van filled with snacks, water, energy gels etc. As soon as they arrived we would jump into action checking their welfare, refilling their water, making them eat and trying to boost their confidence.
While waiting for our team, we raised the spirits of some of the other riders by holding up some homemade signs courtesy of Beth and Chester.
‘SMILE IF YOUR BUM HURTS’ took the top prize for raising everyone’s spirits 🤣.
20/06/2026 is a day that will stick in our minds forever!
They Came, They Pedalled, They Made It!
We missed the sunset by a small margin, but for Cheryl, Matt, Craig and Dan it was about finishing as a team and for Beth, Josh and Jeff it was about making sure that dream was achieved!
CONGRATULATIONS!!🙌

Ever wondered what we do?

999 – Coastguard

Have you got a minute to refresh yourself on the role and capabilities of HM Coastguard in your local area?

🚨 We are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in all weathers

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Our Coastguard Rescue Station is located next to the helicopter museum between Locking and Haywood Village, providing excellent access, allowing us to respond quickly to emergencies along our coastline and beyond.

We operate two emergency response vehicles and are made up of a dedicated team of 14 Coastguard Rescue Officers from a wide range of backgrounds, including education, engineering, emergency services, Civil Service, self-employment and retirement.

Our team brings together a wealth of knowledge and experience, ranging from officers who have recently joined to others with more than 15 years of service.

As Coastguard Rescue Officers, we are on call 24/7 and can be mobilised at any time by pager. While there is no on-call allowance, we receive payment for incidents attended and some specific training undertaken. Many of our officers live close to the station, helping us maintain a rapid response capability.

How HM Coastguard Works

Coastguard Operations Centres, located around the UK, are responsible for coordinating and tasking Search and Rescue (SAR) assets, including Coastguard Rescue Teams, RNLI lifeboats and Coastguard helicopters.

When you dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard, it is one of these Operations Centres that answers your call, assesses the situation and deploys the appropriate rescue resources.

Who We Are

HM Coastguard is a government-funded emergency service and forms part of the UK's national Search and Rescue capability. Unlike some other rescue organisations, HM Coastguard is not a charity and does not rely on public donations to operate.

As a Category 1 responder under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004, HM Coastguard has statutory responsibilities for emergency preparedness, response and recovery. This places the organisation alongside other key emergency services and responder agencies that work together to protect life, property and the environment during emergencies.

Weston Super Mare Coastguard Rescue Team is proud to play its part in delivering that capability at a local level, responding to incidents along our coastline and supporting wider emergency response operations when required such as flooding on the Somerset levels.

What We Do

Weston Super Mare Coastguard Rescue Team attends approximately 120–130 incidents each year and works closely with partner emergency services to provide an effective search and rescue capability.

Our primary responsibilities include:

• Water Rescue
• Technical Rope Rescue
• Technical mud Rescue
• Casualty Care
• Missing Person Searches
• Time-Expired Pyrotechnics and Ordnance (TEP) Response
• Establishing Emergency Helicopter Landing Sites
• Casualty Extraction
• Flood Response
• Royal Fish Duties
• Receiver of Wreck Duties
• Incident Coordination
• Mutual Aid to Other Emergency Services and Agencies

Working Together

Several members of our team are also part of our specialist flood rescue capability, which can be deployed nationally to support communities affected by severe flooding.

Whether responding to a person cut off by the tide, assisting a casualty on difficult coastal terrain, searching for a missing person, or supporting partner agencies during major incidents, our team is ready to respond whenever needed.

🌊 In a coastal emergency, always dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

⛵ For water users, assistance can also be requested via VHF Marine Radio Channel 16.

Coastguard Rescue Teams are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing a lifesaving search and rescue service in all conditions.

Monday evening as you all know is when we give up our spare time, abandon our loving families and venture out to get some quality training done.
And what a lovely evening it was! ☀️
A couple of the team had organised casualty evacuation practice using different types of stretchers and different methods of extraction.
For training purposes, the first 2 scenarios utilised our training mannequin which is quite handy because it doesn’t complain about comfort or pain.
On the final scenario we used a live casualty, and didn’t we live to regret that decision!🤣
We live and learn!🫣
We still had a lovely evening with some great team mates and enjoyed some of that sunshine! 😎

🛟 This week is 'Be Water Aware Week' 🛟

Would you know what to do if someone was in trouble in the water?
Remember:
📱 Phone 999 to get help
🗣️ Tell them to stay calm and float on their back
🛟 Throw rescue equipment to help them float

Never enter the water to attempt a rescue.
Knowing what to do can save a life.

Those keen eyed beach walkers among you may have recently spotted some sea trials in Weston bay. It has at last been agreed by HMCG and the Government to supply us with our very own rescue boat. This is to run alongside the RNLI to keep our waters even safer as the holiday season approaches. Further trials and crew training will be happening over the coming weeks…give us a wave if you see it! 👋🏻
