On behalf of Cleveland Fire Authority, we extend our deepest condolences to our police colleagues, and to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who tragically lost their lives in the road traffic collision on 22 August.

We are also deeply saddened by the tragic fire in Grangetown on 26 August, and our thoughts are with the families, loved ones and wider community affected.

At a time of profound sadness for our emergency service family and the communities we serve, we recognise the dedication, professionalism and compassion shown by all those who responded to these devastating incidents.

We stand alongside our policing colleagues as they grieve the loss of valued and respected colleagues, and with the families and communities whose lives have been changed by these tragic events. We also recognise the lasting impact incidents of this nature can have on everyone involved in the response.

Cleveland Fire Authority would particularly like to recognise and thank our firefighters, control staff, officers and support personnel who responded to and managed these incidents. The professionalism, courage, compassion and dignity demonstrated in the most challenging of circumstances reflect the very highest standards of public service.

While the outcomes were deeply tragic, the care and empathy shown to those affected, and the support provided to our emergency service partners and local communities, was exemplary.
We encourage all staff to continue to look after themselves and one another, and to make use of the welfare and support services available.

Our thoughts remain with our policing colleagues, the families, friends and loved ones of those who lost their lives. They will not be forgotten.

Following Cleveland Fire Brigade’s attendance at a house fire on Birchington Avenue, Grangetown, this morning (Wednesday 26 August), we can confirm that the fire has now been extinguished.

Six fire appliances from Grangetown, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Saltburn attended the incident, along with the Incident Command Unit. One appliance remains at the scene on protective standby.

We can confirm that six people were inside the property at the time of the fire. Tragically, two people have died. One person remains in a critical condition, while three others are receiving treatment.

The circumstances surrounding this tragic incident will now be jointly investigated by Cleveland Police and Cleveland Fire Brigade’s fire investigation officers.

It is with great sadness that we share this update. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of everyone affected at this incredibly difficult time.

Cleveland Fire Brigade is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life following an incident on the A66 in the early hours of this morning.

Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the families, friends and loved ones of those who have lost their lives. We also extend our deepest sympathies to our colleagues at Cleveland Police as they mourn the loss of two serving officers.

This is a devastating incident that will be felt across our communities and by all of the emergency services involved.

🚒 Keeping Skills Sharp and Equipment Ready 🚒

Our weekly drill nights take place every Monday evening from 18:00 to 21:00, alongside our sister on-call station at Skelton Community Fire Station.

As many of our firefighters work shifts, not everyone can attend every Monday session. To ensure training hours are maintained, crews make up their time during the following week.

Some of the duties carried out during make-up time include updating online training, maintaining fitness in the station gym, and undertaking housekeeping tasks on Oscar 3. This includes checking appliance lockers, inspecting equipment, and ensuring everything is correctly stowed, easily accessible, and ready for use when the pager sounds.

These activities help ensure our firefighters remain operationally competent, fit for duty, and prepared to respond whenever the community needs us. 💪🚒

🚒 Drill Night at Loftus Community Fire Station 🚒

This week's drill night focused on pumping from open water and deep lifting operations.
Crews carried out a deep lift using hard suction into the main pump before supplying two 70mm hose lengths to a dam constructed using a triple extension ladder, salvage sheet and ratchet strap. From the dam, a lightweight portable pump was then used to feed a 45mm hose, allowing crews to practise water relay techniques and alternative water supply methods that may be required at incidents in rural locations.

These exercises help maintain operational competence and ensure crews remain proficient in delivering water when hydrants are unavailable or inaccessible.

During the evening, crews also responded to a number of calls:

🔥 18:12 - Liverton Mines Two separate allotment fires. Adults were in attendance carrying out controlled burning with water available on site. Fire safety advice was provided.

🔥 18:53 - Cowbar Reports of a fire were found to be a barbecue being used by holidaymakers. No fire situation was identified. Hosepipe and extinguishing equipment were available, and advice was given.

🔥 19:44 - Easby Court Mobilised following reports of smoke. A thorough investigation was carried out, however no apparent signs of fire were found. The incident was subsequently closed after crews were unable to locate any fire.

A busy and productive evening, combining essential training with operational response to keep our skills sharp and our communities safe. 👍

We attended 6 incidents yesterday. many were dealing with deliberate fires in woodland area's and farmer's fields.

Total duration of time spent on these Incidents was around 8/9 Hours
