Back to Training School 🚒

One of our Crew Managers is currently undertaking the new Incident Command Level 1 (ICL1) training programme.

This updated course builds on previous Crew Manager Managing Incidents training and equips supervisory managers with the knowledge and skills required to confidently command incidents involving five pumps or more, aligning with national fire and rescue service standards.

Week one focuses on practical assessment, bringing together a range of experience and knowledge. Each scenario is evaluated by Learning and Development Watch Managers, with structured group feedback provided to support shared learning.

This training ensures all managers are appropriately assessed at this level and prepared to operate effectively at larger and more complex incidents.

🚒 Joint Training Night at Loftus Community Fire Station 🚒

This month, crews from Grangetown Red Watch (Wholetime) joined Loftus and Skelton On-Call for a joint hazardous materials training exercise.

The scenario, simulated a farm incident involving a chemical reaction and vapour release, requiring crews to identify hazards, implement safe working practices and manage a casualty showing signs of exposure.

Crews worked through:
✅ Hazard recognition and chemical identification using MDT systems
✅ Safe approach, cordon placement and zoning
✅ Deployment in Gas Tight Suits and BA
✅ Casualty rescue and decontamination procedures
✅ Incident command, communication and decision making

It was a great opportunity to strengthen joint working, share knowledge and test our ability to manage a dynamic HazMat incident safely and effectively.

🚒 Loftus Community Fire Station – May Incident Round-Up 🚒

During May, our crews were mobilised 14 times to a range of incidents across our area and beyond.

These included:
Supporting North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service at a road traffic collision where a person was mechanically trapped
Assisting a resident who became trapped in a recliner armchair
Responding to fires, alarms and spills
Carrying out medical co-responder duties
Supporting partner agencies at incidents involving vulnerable persons

A notable incident saw crews work alongside NYFRS, Yorkshire Ambulance Service and the Great North Air Ambulance Service to safely release a casualty trapped in a vehicle following an RTC.

Across all incidents, our firefighters demonstrated professionalism, teamwork and a commitment to protecting our community.

🛟 Throw any available rescue equipment
❎ Do not enter the water to attempt a rescue yourself

Entering the water could put you at risk from cold water shock and strong currents. Please wait for emergency services — our crews have the specialist training and equipment to help safely.

With yesterday being Bank Holiday Monday, our drill night moved to Tuesday.

If our firefighters are working nights or unable to attend, we make every effort to come in during the morning to carry out the standard tests on our equipment, ensuring all equipment is fully operational and ready to respond.

It’s also Test It Tuesday – a great reminder to check your smoke alarms at home. A quick test could make all the difference.
