Mission Kitchen at 5: Part 7

With more than 400 members past and present and an ever-increasing list of food and drink innovators who have come through the doors small and exited back out as much larger, successful business owners, it’s fair to conclude that .kitchen can be proud of its first five years.

But what’s next? Have the horizons changed for the three founders as they view the future through an entirely different prism than the one they peered through at the outset?

In the last of our series of reels, Charlie outlines the organisation’s plans and urges you to contact his team to take your place on the Mission Kitchen train!

If - like .bavin - you have a new product idea burning inside your mind, and you also possess the aspiration to turn your dream into reality, check back over the last couple of weeks of reels on this feed to learn more about what has swiftly become one of London’s most important food hubs.

⭐FRUIT & VEG MARKET REPORT⭐

September brings the best of both summer and autumn.

UK apples are underway. After the dry and hot summer, some growers are reporting smaller calibre fruit. Those with irrigation have seen fewer issues. The first varieties are Discovery, Windsor, Gala. Pears will follow on soon.

European stone fruit is reaching the end of the season. Cherries are over. Peaches and nectarines are winding down but you will still find some good fruit at the start of the month.

The hot summer has been a bonus for grapes - expect excellent quality. There are many varieties - mainly from France and Italy - such as Muscat' and Strawberry.

September also means figs. Bursa black figs from Turkey will keep going for about two months; Sollies black figs from France (pictured here) have a shorter season.

On the citrus front, the European season is just beginning. The photo here shows Verdello from Italy, which are highly aromatic with high levels of essential oils. The Miyagawa clementines will be available this month.

Don't forget UK-grown outdoor rhubarb - ending soon.

For vegetables, beans include the last of the runners. From the Continent, Coco de Paimpol and Borlotti.

UK sweetcorn is a good buy. Some growers reports issues with the lack of rain over summer to swell the kernels.

There is a huge variety of summer and winter squashes on the Market.

UK courgettes still available but end soon.

As the weather cools, brassicas start to improve - the photo here shows UK-grown variegated kale. Also plenty of cabbages to hand.

UK salads should last through September.

As a final flourish, how about these Scottish girolle? Still going and a classy ingredients for any menu.

See you in October for our next Market Report.

FoodPoint celebrates 10 years!

To mark a decade at New Covent Garden Market, FoodPoint has unveiled a colourful new design for its electric van – inspired by the brilliant artwork of a four-year-old.

As FoodPoint supplies fresh produce that is fed to children across London, the age of the artist makes perfect sense!

“In the end, it was a four-year-old who settled it,” said . “We handed over a blank canvas and they just went for it with no brief, no rules, no concern whatsoever about what colour a parsnip should be. We loved it so much that we went with it and, given that we supply a lot of schools, it felt especially fitting.”

Congratulations to FoodPoint on 10 fantastic years and here’s to many more.

Mission Kitchen at 5: Part 6

Traditionally, New Covent Garden Market has been a classic wholesale setting, where traders buy and sell fresh produce, flowers and plants. So, why is Mission Kitchen based at the country’s largest wholesale market and what do its members gain from being here in Nine Elms?
bavin coins it as “reciprocal inspiration” and tells Charlie Gent: “Your members are creating the products of tomorrow that could inspire the guys in the Market, but also the guys in the market have that plethora of wonderful fruit and veg that will hopefully inspire these wonderful food entrepreneurs.”

Charlie agrees that the proximity to so much fantastic fresh produce and other products is a huge inspiration to his members and says he and his team are hugely excited about what’s to come at the newly redeveloped wholesale market site they call home.

Mission Kitchen at 5: Part 5

So, in the first four films, we’ve established that .kitchen provides food and drink startups with the facilities to create and develop their ideas. But what about the next phase – how can being part of this amazing community of foodies help you to turn your fledgling idea into a viable product and a profitable business?

As founder Charlie Guest tells .bavin - there’s a raft of opportunity for members to learn, share and grow – a level of support and mentoring that ordinarily, it is extremely difficult to access. And as each member is successful and introduces amazing food products into the wider market through catering, retail and foodservice customers, an increasing number of food industry buyers are curious to find out where all this innovation is coming from.

This is the fifth of our magnificent 7 films that are a must watch for any aspiring food producer in London looking for a springboard to launch their budding brand into orbit.

Mission Kitchen at 5: Part 4

Charlie Guest continues to look back on the five years he and his fellow founders have spent building Mission Kitchen into one of London’s most important food and drink facilities.

There are a growing number of entrepreneurial food and drink businesses that have been through the Mission Kitchen incubator to become fully fledged brands and, while Charlie understandably can’t have favourites, here he kindly picks three out for .bavin and charts their history and progress as an example of what they and many other members have achieved.

This is the fourth of our magnificent 7 films that are a must watch for any aspiring food producer in London looking for a springboard to national retail and catering listings and with a budding brand ready to breakthrough.

Mission Kitchen at 5: Part 3

So, we’ve established what .kitchen is and how it has evolved with its members over the last half decade. But what types of food and product do its members create in the Food Exchange asks chris.bavin

As Charlie reveals, the range is huge, and reflects the cultural diversity of the 400+ members who have already called Mission Kitchen home.

Keep ‘em peeled as we share the rest of our magnificent 7 films over the next couple of weeks. They really are a must watch for any aspiring food producer in London. .kitchen at New Covent Garden Market is simply the best place in London to build a food or drink business from the bottom up.

With a core offer of commercial kitchens and workspace at the heart of the UK’s largest and best fresh produce market, the vibrant and foodie-filled first floor of the Market’s Food Exchange building provides cooking, working and learning space to a diverse and entrepreneurial community of well over 100 independent food businesses.

Now five years into its existence, having been jointly supported at its outset by The London Mayor’s office and Covent Garden Market Authority, London’s food industry ‘incubator’ has already supported more than 400 members on their journey. Friend of the Market, Chef and TV celebrity Chris Bavin popped in early in August 2026 to chat with one of Mission Kitchen’s three founders, Charlie Guest, about the organisation’s past, present and future.

Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll share a magnificent 7 films that are a must watch for any aspiring food producer in London looking for a springboard to national retail and catering listings and with a budding brand ready to breakthrough.
