Coffee beans: invented by fragrance counters. You heard it here first ☕️
A small correction from the studio: fragrance counters didn't actually invent coffee beans (I'm reliably told they've been around a little longer than that 🙈). What they came up with was the idea of sniffing them between perfumes to "reset" your nose.
The trouble is, it doesn't work. A 2011 study found that sniffing coffee beans helped people pick out a new fragrance no better than lemon slices or plain air. Coffee is packed with aromatic compounds of its own, so you're really just handing a tired nose one more thing to process.
What I do instead: step outside for a breath of fresh air, or take a quiet sniff of your own skin, the scent your nose knows best.
So enjoy your coffee beans. Just maybe not at the perfume counter.
