Following millions of pounds of investment from the Government, the first cohort of Cumbrian apprentices are now in training for telecoms jobs.

Announced by Building Digital UK (BDUK) and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, broadband provider Fibrus, alongside network build partner Viberoptix have committed to creating at least 90 apprenticeships covering a range of roles from underground and overhead cabling to surveying – as part of a £108 million government investment to provide lightning-speed broadband connectivity throughout Cumbria and level-up the county’s digital infrastructure.

In Cumbria, the rollout of the Project Gigabit contract continues to make good progress, with residents and businesses in communities from Aspatria to Staveley now able to access and enjoy lightning-fast connections through Fibrus networks.

Exclusive new feature: Reducing Health Inequalities in England.

Director for Health Inequalities at NHS England and Improvement, Prof. Bola Owolabi, MRCGP MFPH(Hon) writes exclusively for Chamber UK outlining her passion to tackle health inequalities and the work of NHS England’s programme to make a real difference.

Following Curia's work as a policy institute in 2022, the Innovation and Life Sciences Commission and Levelling Up Commission programmes will expand in 2023 to prioritise tackling inequalities. The institute will work with the public, private and independent sector to make recommendations to improve outcomes.

Ahead of launching their report for 2022, the NHS Innovation and Life Sciences commission at Curia hosted a discussion, in partnership with Chamber UK, to talk about the work the commission has done over the past year and their plans for the future.

The discussion was hosted by James O'Shaughnessy and Professor Mike Bewick, the Co-Chairs of the Commission, who were joined by a host of experts in the field. Before taking a seat in the House of Lords and becoming one of the UK’s leading policy advisors, James O'Shaughnessy was a Minister at the Department for Health and Social Care, making his transition to Co-Chair of the commission a natural one.

He conveyed his views on the topic saying "Throughout our work, we have been setting ourselves the goal of creating impactful but practical recommendations that can be implemented at pace in a reasonable timeline. We have imposed deadlines on every single one of our recommendations, not because we want to cause trouble but because we want urgency.”

Why has stated Government policy, announced in the Queen's Speech taken so long to materialise and been subject to such controversy?

In 2018, when Theresa May promised to ban so-called, "conversion therapy" against the LGBT+ community, it signalled a real and concrete commitment to further LGBT+ rights.

After a year of hard work last week we launched our NHS Innovation and Life Sciences Report 2022 at the beautiful One Great George Street.

We were delighted that Steve Brine MP, Chair of the Health and Social Care Committee kindly agreed to give some opening remarks at the event.

He said “It’s no secret that my priorities are cancer and prevention. I made this clear in my pitch when I stood for chair and I’ve reiterated it many times since. These are subjects that I care about strongly – both from my experience in parliament as a Public Health Minister and sadly, my personal experience.”
