Public statement: MLA Michael Goss speaks at Decolonisation Committee Regional Seminar
MLA Michael Goss is currently in Managua, Nicaragua, representing the Falkland Islands at the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonisation Regional Seminar.
The Regional Seminar is held annually in advance of the Committee's main session in New York. It brings together representatives of UN member states, administering powers, and non-self-governing territories to discuss decolonisation matters, and provides an opportunity for the Falkland Islands to make its case directly to participating delegations.
Today MLA Goss addressed the seminar, calling on delegates to recognise the Falkland Islands as a self-governing democracy whose people have already exercised their right to self-determination. He spoke of his own family's six generations in the Islands, the 2013 referendum, and the Falklands' continued willingness to be a responsible partner in the South Atlantic β noting that while the Islands delivered on their commitments under the 2024 UK-Argentina cooperation package, Argentina has yet to do the same.
MLA Goss renewed the Legislative Assembly's open invitation to the Committee to send a visiting mission to the Falkland Islands, telling delegates: "We have nothing to hide and everything to show."
