On Merchant Navy Awareness Day, we recognise the vital contribution of merchant seafarers, past and present.

Gibraltar is a community that understands the importance of the maritime industry. From supporting global trade and economic prosperity to keeping essential goods moving around the world, merchant mariners play a crucial role in our everyday lives.

Today, the Convent will have the Red Ensign raised as thanks to those who serve at sea and to celebrate the enduring contribution of the maritime community.

The Red Ensign originated in the in the early 17th century as a naval ensign for the Royal Navy and later became the civil ensign for British merchant ships. Before 1707, separate English and Scottish red ensigns were used by their respective navies. The flag evolved over time, including the addition of the Cross of St George in the canton by 1620, which was later removed in some colonies due to religious objections. It has symbolised British maritime prowess and national pride for centuries.

Staff from the Office of the Governor took part in a training session on Artificial Intelligence, exploring how emerging technologies can support government work responsibly and effectively. The session covered the fundamentals of AI and large language models, practical productivity tools, responsible use and data governance, as well as the opportunities AI presents for Gibraltar's public sector.

Andy Duncan, from Katalaxy Learning, led the workshop and demonstrated how AI can support research tasks and assist with workflow management, while reinforcing the importance of human oversight and accountability in decision-making.

Participants responded very positively to the session, which equipped staff with the confidence and ability to use AI effectively in the workplace.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Equality and The Youth Service, the Office of the Governor's public policy team hosted a breakfast to hear directly from young women about the barriers they face and challenges that continue to impede gender equality.

The group explored the support, initiatives and opportunities that women would like to see developed through UK-Gibraltar collaboration, as well as careers in international relations, diplomacy, and public service. They also discussed the lived experiences of young women, the impact of social media and societal expectations, and how public institutions could better understand the next generation.

The Office of the Governor would like to thank everyone who shared their perspectives, ideas and experiences. These conversations are invaluable in helping us better understand the issues that matter most to young women in Gibraltar. A special thanks to Rebecca Figueras from the Youth Service and Marlene Dalli from the Ministry of Equality for helping us organise the event.
