How the EU reset fails Burnham's ‘Makerfield Test’ - Labour’s next leader is about to betray his local voters over links to the EU, just weeks after being elected ... writes DM director Stuart Coster for Global Britain.

Given the EU reset is such a glaringly inept deal,, one that certainly fails his ‘Makerfield Test', why is Burnham allowing himself to be railroaded into it?

Ten years ago today, voters imposed an extraordinary and historic democratic revolution on Britain's political establishment - instructing that they take back control from the remote European Union and govern Britain, once again.

Reverberations from that seismic vote are still being felt today, as many in Westminster and Whitehall, unable to see beyond Brussels, refused to respect that democratic demand - and are now, still, trying to undermine it any way they can.

Yet, ten years on, despite their obsessive campaign of negativity, there's absolutely no evidence in real data of any negative impact on UK growth due to Brexit. In fact, UK GDP is doing better than fellow G7 economies still in the EU single market.

A simple, clear reality - and one so glaring that it's driving those EU obsessives crazy.

All continuity Remainers have ever been able to point to is fantasy losses from imaginary 'counterfactuals'. A weak response, compared to real data and the big Brexit prizes of genuine democracy and global opportunity in a fast-changing world; one that is much faster-moving than the EU.

Brexit has worked, by delivering democracy, and it has also proved itself robust in difficult economic times, including a global pandemic, inflation and energy shocks.

We now know, beyond doubt, that the scare stories of the Remain campaign never happened.

If Westminster and Whitehall can summon up the courage to govern, rather than continue trying to hand decisions back to the EU all over again, the best of Brexit is still to come.

Andy Burnham has been elected in Leave-voting Makerfield on the basis of not re-running the Brexit debate or seeking to rejoin the EU. He must show that he deserves their trust. This is Labour's last chance.

Speaking in Leeds last month, Burnham said: "I am not proposing that the UK considers rejoining the EU.

"I respect the decision that was made at the referendum and it is going to undermine everything I have said about strengthening democracy if we don't respect that vote."

A good first step would be to abandon Keir Starmer's unpopular 'EU reset'.

The potential leadership challenger says he is not proposing the UK considers rejoining the EU.

Essential reading >> "The Brexit horror stories aren't true ... Conventional wisdom says that leaving the European Union has harmed the British economy. As we go into June, and the 23rd approaches – the 10-year anniversary of that era-defining referendum – this message will be rammed home again and again. But it simply isn’t true."

‘Project Fear’ – led by George Osborne and the Treasury – was pure propaganda

What would the UK's share be, if we had remained a member of the EU? A credible estimate puts it at £207 BILLION over 7 years - a shocking £29 billion a year. Thanks to , we've had a lucky escape and won't need to cut public services or raise taxes to pay these massive new fees to the EU. 👍

Brilliant analysis by Briefings for Britain, demolishing so many government claims on EU alignment. No mantra by Rachel Reeves or Peter Kyle is left standing:

➡️ 'EU reset' will have a net negative impact on GDP

➡️ EU membership was a costly way to buy free trade

➡️ Declining EU is no longer our 'largest market'

➡️ Exports to the rest of the world grew much faster even before Brexit, defying 'gravity model' theories.

The EU single market delivered weak export growth for the UK. New analysis questions claims that closer alignment will boost UK trade or GDP.

Britain should not rejoin the EU. We would not benefit from a good deal and the bloc has only deteriorated
