THE DEBATE WAS NEVER ABOUT THE GRAPHICS
As most people following Reform UK Bracknell will know, there's been much discussion about a post with some representative graphics and although everyone is entitled to their view, there is one point (at least) worth making.
The original post was prompted by several concerned residents and local business people who had serious concerns about the general malaise about anti-social behaviour (ASB) around the Bracknell constituency. Many photographs and examples of the issues were provided, many of which will already have been seen, as some have been posted by those concerned people, already. Some related to litter and fly-tipping, others to anti-social behaviour, vandalism, environmental damage and a wider feeling that standards are slipping throughout the borough.
The attached real photograph is just one example but it also shows why it wasn't used, being too specific to a single 'readily identifiable' location. What we were actually trying to illustrate was not a single incident, a single street or even a single neighbourhood. The concern was that these issues are appearing in too many places and are being reported by too many people to be dismissed as isolated events.
That is why we chose to use representative imagery.
Furthermore, in truth, this is not the first time illustrative graphics have been used in public debate. If you recall, before AI it was cartoons and characterisation and the most memorable of these had to be "spitting image", for those old enough to remember that brilliant programme, which I'm 100% positive no-one (in their right minds) considered real. Nor is it the first time we have used similar 'representative' imagery, for instance when celebrating Bracknell, promoting local events and highlighting positive messages. One example has been provided and nobody appeared to object then.
What has been interesting this time though is just how quickly the conversation moved away from the issues themselves, by a small (but significant) number of those reacting to the post and onto, sometimes downright vitriolic commentary, about the method used to convey them.
As we said, up front, "everyone is entitled to their view" and some people are understandably cautious about emerging technology. In fact, we also share the belief that any new tool should be used responsibly and with proper oversight. We believe that was the case here, as demonstrated by those positively engaging with the real debate.
What has not changed, however, is the actual substance of the original message.
- The photographs underpinning the original graphics are real.
- The incidents underpinning the original graphics are real, and
- The concerns being raised by residents and businesses are all very real.
Since the original post, we have received yet more photographs, emails and messages from people sharing their own experiences and concerns.
Bracknell remains a great place to live, work and raise a family. That is precisely why these issues matter and why so many people care about them.
For us, that was, still is and will remain the real conversation.
