Yesterday, I attended the Baby Loss Awareness Week debate in the House of Commons.

This is an important issue that affects many families, and it was encouraging to hear thoughtful contributions from MPs across all parties about the need to raise awareness and improve support for those affected.

Thank you to everyone who has written to me to share their experiences. These contributions are important in highlighting the impact of baby loss and the need for continued action and support.

While families across the country struggle to find a safe and affordable home, 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝟑𝟎𝟎,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐲.

Labour is giving councils, including Harrow, greater powers to bring these properties back into use and help local families find a secure place to live.

𝐂𝐀𝐌𝐏𝐀𝐈𝐆𝐍 𝐒𝐔𝐂𝐂𝐄𝐒𝐒 - 𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐒 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐎 𝐍𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐇 𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐑𝐎𝐖 𝐉𝐔𝐍𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍

It's been far too long coming but I'm pleased that finally major changes are coming to one of North Harrow's most dangerous junctions.

For many years, I have been campaigning with local residents for better pedestrian safety at the Junction of Pinner Road and Station Road following a series of major accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians trying to cross the road. With several local schools round the corner, including St John Fisher Primary and Nower Hill High, plus a busy local nursery, Harrow Council should have acted a long time ago.

However, I am pleased that thanks to our campaign, changes are now coming. TfL and the Council are installing new pedestrian crossing lights as well as a dedicated cycle crossing, too.

The Council does need to design this carefully to make sure road safety is improved and that problems aren’t created elsewhere.

Although this is welcome news, it is only the start of what needs to be done to improve safety in North Harrow. We urgently need safety measures at North Harrow's other two dangerous junctions: at the Ridgeway/Imperial Drive junction and outside Nower Hill School itself.

I am delighted that from today, the Labour Government is removing VAT from your electricity bills.

The cost of living crisis has hit people hard and global events such as Putin’s war in Ukraine, the Iran conflict and the situation in the Middle East has added more pressure to families across the country, especially in Harrow.

That is why this government is committed to giving households across the country a helping hand. The measures announced by Andy Burnham on Tuesday will:

📉 Bring down energy bills for households
🛡️Shield households from sudden global economic shocks
👛 Put more money back into the purses of hardworking families.

I welcome these measures as they will provide some immediate relief and give breathing space during the winter period. Moreover, I am pleased that the government have announced other cost-saving measures for households this autumn/winter including cracking down on school uniform rules, cutting business rates for pubs, social clubs and live music venues and the expansion of the £150 Warm Home Discount to around six million households.

In the long term, the Labour Government will look at measures to bring down the cost of bills permanently including investing in homegrown renewable energy and establishing Great British Grid to help improve competition, speed up grid connections, and lower costs for hardworking families across the country
