Meeting on Friday. Mask of Oceanus. The Romans first thought of the Ocean as a river surrounding the world that that they knew. Britain was the other side of the Ocean and therefore perhaps a brave step which might be why the discovery of a mask of Oceanus in Hampshire is significant. Ocean Rising, a Roman Divinity

Recently found in Hampshire was a bronze mask in the form of the divinity Ocean. Britain’s maritime position inspired awe and fear among its Roman conquerors. Plus, some recent finds reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme.

September 30th - John Pearce Senior Lecturer in Archaeology Kings College London - Ocean Rising – A Roman Divinity Discovered in Hampshire

Recently found in Hampshire , a bronze mask in the form of the divinity Ocean. Britain’s maritime position inspired awe and fear among it’s Roman conquerors . Plus some recent finds reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme.

October 28 th - Andrew Negus. Wi******er, Bishops Buildings and Bones Part 1 BC-1100. Covering the city’s Celtic origins and its development under the Romans,

Saxons and Normans. We will meet a Saint, several rich and crafty Bishops and the longest cathedral in the world.

November 25 th – Mary South . Hampshire’s Hidden Churches

A look at some of Hampshire’s lesser- known small churches and some of their secret treasures.

January 27 th -

Robert Amis – Lymington’s Workhouse.

The story of Lymington’s Workhouse looking at the social history of it’s inhabitants and evidence from local documents.

February 24 th - Members’ Evening. Memories of World War 2 from recollections. Some participants will present a 10 minute talk each, there will be displays of

their wider work to enjoy before the talks .
