Is your child struggling in school despite having an EHCP?
If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and their needs have changed, support is no longer working, or they are finding school difficult, you do not have to wait for the next annual review.
You can ask the Local Authority or school to hold an early annual review of the EHCP.
An early review may be appropriate if your child is
• At risk of exclusion or receiving repeated suspensions
• Struggling with attendance due to their SEND
• Experiencing increased anxiety, distress or emotional wellbeing difficulties
• Not making expected progress despite support being in place
• Showing new or changing needs
• Requiring additional provision or support
The annual review process is an important opportunity to look at whether the EHCP still accurately reflects your child's needs and whether the provision and placement remain appropriate.
If your child is struggling, it is important to raise concerns as soon as possible and request a review in writing, explaining why the EHCP may no longer be meeting their needs.
Remember: An EHCP is a live document and should be reviewed whenever there is evidence that significant changes may be needed.
