Boardroom Apprentice is designed to prepare individuals from a wide range of backgrounds to take on the responsibilities of board-level roles, whether in the public or third sector.

Through structured learning, real boardroom experience and ongoing support, the programme focuses on building the knowledge, understanding and confidence required to contribute effectively at board level.

The UK Boardroom Apprentice Learning and Development Programme Report brings together evidence from across the 2025 cohort, examining learning outcomes, confidence development, application of learning and readiness to serve.

The evaluation confirms that the programme is focused not only on widening access to boardrooms, but on preparing people properly for the responsibility of governance and decision-making.

It shows how learning, experience and support combine to create meaningful routes into board-level roles, while enabling boards to benefit from new perspectives and diverse thinking.

As part of the evaluation, Boardroom Apprentices were asked how they planned to apply what they had learned.

One response captured this shift clearly:

“The programme has helped me bridge the gap between an aspiration to serve and having the confidence to apply by giving me an understanding of the responsibilities of Board members as well as hands on experience with my Host Board.”

Across the evaluation, participants described moving from aspiration to action, with greater clarity about board responsibilities and readiness to apply for roles.

Strong boards matter, particularly in the public and third sectors where decisions have a direct impact on communities and services.

Boardroom Apprentice focuses on preparing people to understand the responsibility that comes with board membership, including accountability, challenge, decision-making and stewardship.

The UK Boardroom Apprentice Learning and Development Programme 2025 Report shows how participants developed the knowledge, confidence and understanding required to engage with these responsibilities effectively.

By supporting people from a wide range of backgrounds to participate in governance, the programme contributes to stronger, more representative boardrooms and supports the long-term health of public and third sector organisations.

Thank you to all the host boards who provided a safe seat at a table for someone to learn.

Preparing people for board responsibility requires more than confidence alone. It requires deep understanding across governance, finance, legal duties and the wider board environment.

The UK Boardroom Apprentice Learning and Development Programme 2025 Report shows significant increases in knowledge and understanding across all key learning areas following completion of the programme.

The evaluation found:
📈 An 87% increase in understanding of internal and external environments, dynamics and relationships in which board members operate
📈 A 92% increase in understanding of board members’ responsibilities for an organisation’s finances
📈 A 90% increase in understanding of the legal responsibilities and duties of a board member

Across all learning areas, participants reported substantial increases in good and excellent understanding.

Notably, no Boardroom Apprentices perceived themselves to be leaving the programme with no understanding in any of the key subject areas.

Taken together, these findings show how structured learning, real boardroom experience and support translate into meaningful readiness for board-level roles.

The UK Boardroom Apprentice Learning and Development Programme 2025 Report highlights how participants developed a deeper understanding of board responsibility and governance.

As one Boardroom Apprentice reflected in the evaluation:

“My key learning has been understanding how strategic decisions are made at board level and how effective governance shapes real-world impact.”

That insight sits at the heart of what Boardroom Apprentice is designed to do.

Boardroom Apprentice prepares individuals to serve in board-level roles, whether as board members in the public sector or as trustees in a charity. By combining practical boardroom experience with structured learning and support, the programme focuses on equipping people with the knowledge, confidence and understanding required to step into these roles responsibly.

The Report shows that this approach aligned strongly with participant expectations, with 93% of Boardroom Apprentices saying their hopes and expectations were fully met or exceeded.

Board roles need more than enthusiasm. Key attributes include understanding, confidence and a clear sense of responsibility.

The UK Boardroom Apprentice Learning and Development Programme 2025 Report captures what participants hoped to gain from the programme.

They spoke about wanting:

✅ The skills and confidence to sit on a board
✅A full understanding of what it means to be a valuable board member
✅Personal and professional growth
✅New skills
✅A clearer understanding of the board member role

These aren’t abstract ambitions. They reflect a serious intent to prepare properly for board-level responsibility.

The subsequent evaluation shows how learning, experience and support addressed these areas in practice, giving participants the knowledge, confidence and understanding required to contribute effectively at board level.

Choosing to serve on a board is rarely about status. It is about responsibility, contribution and making a meaningful difference.

The UK Boardroom Apprentice Learning and Development Programme 2025 Report highlights clear motivations among participants.

Participants told us that they applied because:

⭐ They wanted to gain practical board experience
⭐ They wanted their participation to lead towards future boardroom positions
⭐ They wanted to give back to the community
⭐ They wanted to build the confidence to sit on a board

As one apprentice reflected:

“I've learned to move through the uncomfortable moments and keep thinking of the bigger picture; the importance of accountability, challenge and the courage to do what's right.”

Boardrooms only become more diverse if the routes into them attract people from a wide range of backgrounds in the first place.

The UK Boardroom Apprentice Learning and Development Programme 2025 Report looks at the diversity of people who applied to take part in the programme.

Across 342 applications received for the 2025 programme, the data shows a broad and varied applicant pool:

✅ 57% of applicants were women
✅ Applicants spanned a wide age range, from early career to later working life
✅ 13% of applicants identified as disabled
✅ 42% identified indicators of social mobility
✅ There was representation across ethnicity and sexual orientation.

What these figures represent is access. They show that when board learning and experience are structured, supported and open to those without prior board roles, people from many different backgrounds are willing to step forward.

This applicant diversity provides important context for understanding how Boardroom Apprentice contributes to widening access to boardrooms in practice.
