πŸ’” An Important Update from Warsop Wildlife πŸ’”

After a great deal of deliberation and many difficult conversations, it is with extremely heavy hearts that we announce the TEMPORARY CLOSURE of Warsop Wildlife.

This is not goodbye forever. Just a pause.
We will still be on hand for EMERGENCIES when desperate help is needed. However general admits will no longer be taking place.

Over the coming weeks and months, we will be exploring ways to secure the future of Warsop Wildlife. We need more volunteer drivers to help transport animals into care, more support from local businesses and individuals, and more fundraising opportunities to help us continue our work. If you can help with any of these please do get in touch.

For the past three years, we have poured everything we have into this rescue. We have pushed through exhaustion, sacrificed personal time, and done our absolute best to be there whenever wildlife needed us. But the reality is that we have reached a point where we simply cannot continue operating as we are.

Behind every rescue, every late night call, every emergency journey, and every round the clock feed is a small team of volunteers. We are not just rescuers; we are parents, partners, employees, carers, and people with homes, families, commitments, and responsibilities of our own. Right now, every single one of us is completely worn out.

What started as a small voluntary team in our hometown grew into something much bigger than we ever imagined. Over the years, our name became trusted across the county, and we are incredibly proud of the thousands of wild animals we have been able to help along the way.

But pride alone does not keep a rescue running.

We regularly find ourselves at full capacity while more animals desperately need help. We face the heartbreak of knowing wildlife needs rescuing, yet we simply do not have the space, resources, volunteers, or capacity to respond. The reality of round the clock feeds, ongoing rehabilitation, and travelling miles to attend rescues has become unsustainable.

Wildlife rescues are few and far between, and nearly every one of them is already stretched to breaking point. The sad truth is that without greater support, more rescues will be forced to close their doors, whether temporarily or permanently.

The simple truth is this: the more support we receive, the more wildlife we can save.

Operating from limited space has always presented challenges, but we have never stopped doing everything we can for the animals that come through our doors. Our long-term dream remains the same, to secure a dedicated premises from which we can operate. A permanent facility would not only allow us to help more wildlife, but would also create opportunities for additional volunteers to become directly involved in animal care and rehabilitation.

To everyone who has supported us over the last three years, whether through donations, sharing our posts, volunteering, transporting animals, or simply believing in what we do, thank you πŸ™πŸ’– Your support has helped save countless lives, and for that we will always be grateful.

Please continue to follow our page as we work behind the scenes, discuss our future, and launch pledges and appeals to help secure the long-term future of Warsop Wildlife.

This may be a pause, but we sincerely hope it is not the end.

Thank you for standing with us.

🦌 Why Are We Seeing More Deer in Our Towns and Villages? 🦌

It's a question we're hearing more and more often: "Why are deer suddenly turning up in gardens, housing estates, industrial areas and busy roads?"

The simple answer is that they haven't moved into our space... we've moved into theirs.

Across the country, natural habitats are disappearing at an alarming rate. Woodlands are being cleared, hedgerows removed, and fields developed to make way for new housing, roads and commercial developments. While these projects may be necessary for human expansion, they come at a cost to our wildlife.

For deer, the consequences can be devastating.

The woodland corridors they have used for generations are being fragmented. Feeding grounds are shrinking. Safe routes between habitats are disappearing. As a result, deer are increasingly forced into built up areas in search of food, shelter and safe passage.

Sadly, this often puts them in danger.

Every year we see deer trapped in gardens, tangled in fencing, injured on roads, or found exhausted after becoming disorientated in unfamiliar surroundings. Many are simply trying to navigate a landscape that no longer resembles the one they once knew.

The next time you spot a deer wandering through a housing estate or crossing a busy road, remember that it isn't lost by choice. It is adapting the best it can to a world that is changing around it.

As communities continue to grow, we must also consider the wildlife that shares our environment. Protecting green spaces, preserving wildlife corridors and respecting the animals around us is essential if we want future generations to experience the incredible wildlife that still exists on our doorstep.

Please drive carefully, especially during dawn and dusk, and if you find a deer in distress, contact an appropriate wildlife rescue for advice.

Because every deer seen in a town or village is often a reminder of the wild spaces that once stood there.

🚨 Operation Quackers: The Duckling That Refused To Be Rescued! 🚨

What started as a simple duckling rescue quickly turned into a full scale multi agency operation involving more bodies than some major incidents!

Last night, reports came in of a lone duckling stranded in the canal. The call was passed through by Dennis Duck Rescue C.I.C, to our friends at FPC Poultry Rescue UK who attended to help with hands from a few others. Despite their best efforts, a determined canal swimmer, and plenty of teamwork, the tiny feathered fugitive managed to evade capture at every turn. As darkness fell, the score stood at:

πŸ¦† Duckling: 1
πŸ‘¨β€πŸš’ Rescuers: 0

Fast forward to this morning when our avian handler and partner arrived on scene. They could hear the little troublemaker calling, but there wasn't a duckling in sight.

Eventually, our suspect emerged from hiding. Nervous, cautious, and apparently trained in advanced evasive manoeuvres, the first netting attempt failed spectacularly.

With plans being discussed to launch a boat and take the operation onto the water, the duckling suddenly made a tactical error and approached the canal edge.

Opportunity knocked....
Swoop number two!

The duckling attempted one final dramatic dive for freedom, but this time luck wasn't on its side. Net deployed, duckling secured, mission accomplished!

πŸ¦† Duckling: 1
πŸ‘¨β€πŸš’ Rescuers: 1

A fantastic team effort involving multiple organisations and dedicated volunteers, all coming together to save one tiny life.

Team work = Dream work

A huge thank you to everyone involved in this rescue. It may have only been one duckling, but every life matters, and teamwork won the battle πŸ’–

πŸ“’ Important Update Regarding Casualty Collections πŸ“’

Due to the ever-increasing demand on our small voluntary team, we have had to make the difficult decision to stop routine collections of wildlife casualties.

Going forward, we kindly ask that where it is safe and practical to do so, finders contain the animal and arrange transport to us. This will allow our team to remain available for the growing number of emergencies we receive each day and ensure we can continue helping as many animals as possible.

There are, however, some important exceptions. We will continue to assist with the collection and specialist handling of:

🦒 Swans
πŸͺΏ Geese
πŸ¦† Ducks
🦌 Deer
🦊 Foxes
🦑 Badgers

These species often require trained handlers, specialist equipment, or present safety risks to both the animal and the finder if not dealt with correctly.

We understand this may be inconvenient for some, but as a small volunteer led rescue operating under increasing pressure, we must focus our resources where they are most needed.

We would like to thank everyone for their continued support, understanding, and willingness to help wildlife in need.

Thank you for helping us help them.

Regards,
Warsop Wildlife Rescue Team

πŸ’” A Sad Update About the Shirebrook Swan πŸ’”

It is with great sadness that we have had to make the decision to relocate the swan from Shirebrook Leisure Centre following further reports of disturbance and harassment this morning.

This beautiful wild bird had done nothing more than choose a quiet place to rest and live, yet instead of being left in peace, it has faced repeated incidents of people chasing it, throwing objects towards it, and allowing dogs to pursue it.

Wildlife should not have to live in fear because of human behaviour.

We know the vast majority of people care deeply about our wildlife and have been just as upset as we are by what has been happening. Unfortunately, it only takes a small number of individuals to turn what should be a safe haven into an unsafe environment.

The welfare of the swan must always come first, and after careful consideration we felt relocation was the only option available to prevent further stress, injury, or worse.

It's difficult not to ask the question: why are some people so cruel to our wildlife?

These animals feel fear. They experience stress. They deserve the same compassion and respect that we would expect for any living creature.

Today, one swan has lost its home because of the actions of people who simply could not leave it alone.

We can only hope that its new location offers the peace and safety it should have had all along.

Thank you to everyone who reported concerns, looked out for the swan, and showed kindness throughout this situation. Your support for our wildlife never goes unnoticed.

β€‹πŸ¦” MEET SOFTOP! πŸ¦”
This little hedgehogs story has a seriously happy ending! Softop rolled into our lives back in early April, and he actually holds the proud title of being one of the very first VIPs (Very Important Prickles) admitted to our brand-new Critical Care Unit! πŸŽ‰πŸ₯
As you can see, he had a pretty rough start. He came to us after a terrible accident where he was scalped, which we can only assume was caused by a garden strimmer. πŸ˜’πŸ’”
But look at him now! Softop wants to give a massive, hedgehog-sized THANK YOU to every single one of you! πŸ¦”β€οΈβœ¨
Without your incredibly generous donations, we wouldn't have had the advanced equipment to provide him with the urgent, lifesaving care he so desperately needed, Or the cozy space to continue his healing journey. 🏑🌱
Because of you, this resilient little guy got a second chance at life. Thank you for being his absolute heroes! πŸ¦Έβ€β™‚οΈπŸ¦Έβ€β™€οΈπŸ’«

🚨 Please Help Protect the Shirebrook Swan 🚨

We have received multiple reports of people harassing the resident swan at Shirebrook Leisure Centre, including children throwing objects and chasing the bird. We have also received reports of a small number of dog walkers allowing their dogs to chase the swan.

Sadly, only this morning a terrier was allowed to pursue the swan, causing it to flee towards nearby roads and placing it in serious danger.

This swan deserves to live peacefully in its home without being subjected to fear, stress and potential injury. Repeated disturbance can have serious consequences for wildlife and is simply unacceptable.

We would like to remind everyone that deliberately disturbing, harassing or causing suffering to wildlife can constitute a wildlife crime. Wildlife offences against birds and other wild animals are taken seriously by the police and specialist rural and wildlife crime officers. If you witness anyone chasing, throwing objects at, or otherwise deliberately harassing this swan, please report it to the Rural & Wildlife Crime Team via 101.

Without reports being made, there is very little that can be done to identify offenders and prevent these incidents from continuing.

Please be respectful when visiting the area:
🦒 Keep dogs under control and on a lead if necessary.
🦒 Do not allow children to chase or throw things at wildlife.
🦒 Report any incidents you witness.
🦒 Help us keep this beautiful bird safe.

The swan has as much right to be there as anyone else. Let's all do our part to ensure it remains safe and protected.

Feel free to share this far and wide within the local community. Every report helps build a picture of what's happening and gives the authorities the evidence they need to act.

Our avian handler has certainly earned his tea break this morning! β˜•πŸ¦

First up, a report of a bird trapped inside a cooker extraction hood. After checking inside, investigating from outside, and even sacrificing an arm to the extraction pipe, the only things rescued were a collection of cobwebs and grease. No bird in sight!

Call number two proved much more productive. A bird reportedly trapped behind an old fireplace that now houses a solid fuel burner. Thankfully, removing a small access board revealed a rather surprised young jackdaw who suddenly found himself back in daylight after an unexpected adventure. Covered head to toe in soot and dust, he looked like he'd just finished a night shift down the mines!

Rescue work is many things, but glamorous isn't usually one of them. Wildlife certainly has a habit of keeping us guessing and testing our problem solving skills in the most unusual ways! πŸ¦πŸ› οΈπŸ˜‚
