First of many window conservation repairs for this Hall in Rutland undergoing major works. With

Always a great opportunity to conserve a building as grand as this one. It’s true when we say ‘they don’t build them like they used to!’

It’s important to use the closest species and grade of timber to what’s being conserved for splice repairs.
Not only for conservation purposes but functionality. A close match will move with the original joinery hence: better finish, joint stability and almost invisible to the eye.

🔹The final piece of external joinery for the oak house project.

This newly installed green oak porch nicely frames a European oak double boarded door sat inside a glazed screen.

Finished with 19mm T and G boards either side, the door also has an insulation panel hidden inside for maximum heat retention.

Just some traditional style cabinetry to follow in the next coming weeks!

Phase 1 of the Oak House project is well underway. With

All the green oak frames are now glazed and water tight, secured in place with characterful European Oak cladding.

Time to crack on with the double door sets and newly modified porch!

🔹Reclaim stone fire surrounds🔹

A little off the beaten track of woodwork. After completing a ironstone extension we moved into the original section of the property to install some reclaim fire surrounds.

One in herringbone and one in stretcher bond. Both built with traditional lime mortar.

A fitting feature for another Old Rectory!

🔹New like for like replacement sashes throughout, with extensive repairs to existing frames.

🔹Majority of the frames needed new cill fronts and timber splices, made easier with an elastic repair compound specifically designed for decaying timber.

🔹All the window components have been fully refurbished; new sash cord, re-balanced with lead weights, pulleys cleaned and oiled; so are now in full working order!

Onto the next Old Rectory! We have refurbished the first phase of windows and will return next year to finish the rest.

Proof that even sashes with no bottom rails or glazing bars can be conserved! With a bit of patience and a steady hand.

We recently refurbished two bay windows in need of attention at a local Manor House!

Minor sash repairs, new cills and plenty of timber splices for the frames. Most of the windows ceased to open but are now back into full operation.

Preserving original features is key to keeping the charm of an old listed building like this one!

Another happy client! After completing the cart shed we moved straight onto the Red Barn. Which is now an impressive holiday let in heart of rural Leicestershire.

Very similar procedures as the cart shed, with the inclusion of a lot more steel work. Due to the brickwork resembling the characteristics of a wave, an endo-skeleton of wind-posts, pattress plates, wall ties and helifix bars were needed to stop the building going any further.

Various repairs throughout to keep as much history as possible, some 'honest repairs' to accentuate certain features.

All the brickwork was raked out and repointed with a hot lime mix.

Everything was constructed and finished with traditional materials so it will be around for many years to come.

Here is a few stage snippets of a conservation and repurposing project we did on a cart shed which was in a sorry state.

The existing roof beam and rafter ends had completely perished. Instead of starting again, we spliced in new rafter tails and repaired the truss ends using traditional scarf joints.

Cork and wood fibre insulation throughout to allow the building to breath naturally and keep the place dry.

All finished with lime plaster and breathable paint.
