A trial of a three-way pedestrian crossing in the centre of Swinton is underway this week - as local councillors urge residents to have their say on proposed road safety plans.

Government-funded proposals cover the length of the A6022 from the Woodman Roundabout to Rowms Lane.

ROTHERHAM Council has successfully prosecuted a landlord after hazards including “the absence of smoke alarms, poor property security, and evidence of rodent infestation” were identified at a privately rented property in the borough.

🛣️ A6022 Consultation Now Open 🛣️

RMBC has now launched a full public consultation on proposals to improve the safety of road users and pedestrians along the A6022, which runs from the Woodman Roundabout to the Boundary with Doncaster at the end of Rowms Lane.

Funding has been secured from Round 3 of the Government’s Safer Roads Fund and focuses on reducing future risk, rather than only addressing recorded injury collisions.

🛣️ Proposed interventions 🛣️

🔺 Sheltered parking and roadside hatching at various locations

🔺 Pedestrian crossing refuges at various locations

🔺 Traffic-calming chicane near Brameld Road
Junction & safety kerb improvements at Racecourse Road

🔺 Three-arm signalised junction at Queens Street, with pedestrian crossings on all arms

🔺 Revised give-way lines at Wortley Avenue, Crossland Street and Broomville Street, including kerb buildouts

🔺 Gateway feature on Rowms Lane

🔺 Updated and refreshed road markings

As residents your say is important! This road is used by many travelling through the borough but the impact is felt most strongly by those who live here.

📆 The will also be a drop in event held at the Civic Hall on 21st May 2pm - 8pm where any questions can be asked of officers - paper surveys will also be available here.

Cabinet were back in the town hall this morning:

✅ Agreeing our new homelessness strategy, stepping up our efforts to support those at risk of homelessness. Last year more than 1,800 local people needed support.
✅ Confirming extra dedicated resources for Selective Licensing areas - including Eastwood, Masborough, parts of Dinnington, Thurcroft and Parkgate - setting out how we’ll work together with tenants, landlords and residents to improve those communities and tackle some of the anti-social behaviour and fly tipping that blights parts of them.
✅ Backing our high streets, with business support and local annual grant funding for Swinton, Wath, Maltby, Dinnington and the town centre.
✅ Ensuring our new libraries in Wath and the town centre go ahead - without writing a blank cheque, so we’re protecting value for the taxpayer.
✅ And our annual roads programme - more than £10m to resurface more than 100 roads across the borough as we continue to drive down the number of potholes.

That’s investment to make every part of our borough better.

🎡It's a Fair Question! 🎡

We've received a number of contacts regarding the fair advertised locally as coming to Swinton on Queen St field next week.

✅Firstly, permission has been granted for this. The operators have supplied all required health and safety planning information, including safeguarding and security as expected with all events on RMBC sites.

🚷The fair will be fully enclosed, with security personnel present.

The enclosure will cover the area around the football pitches, but the footpath and other areas will remain accessible throughout the event.

🍔There will be food and drink vendors, but no alcohol sales.

🚻 Public toilets will be provided by the operator.

🚗Visitors are asked to respect the neighbouring residents, including by walking to and a from the event, using public transport or parking the the free RMBC carparks at Queen Street or the Robin Hood.

🌳There was some trimming of vegetation this morning to permit access, which was done following assessment by the councils trees officers and met legal obligations, including assessment for nesting activity.

This is the first time an event like this has been permitted on Queen Street field in the recent past and we are keen to hear feedback following the event, before any future activities are permitted on this space.

🚆 Check out the South Yorkshire by Train board at Swinton Station.

So much infrastructure locally, just waiting for the services to make it all it can be.

Chris and I met with John Healey today to discuss further and share local frustrations with the prolonged reduction in services through Swinton & Rotherham. We're looking forward to working together to push for the investment the train network needs to make it a reliable and accessible first choice for all.
