What an amazing turnout at the Run for Jo event today at Oakwell Hall.

A huge thank you to the amazing Kim Leadbeater and to the Jo Cox Foundation and More in Common for organising this for the last 10 years in memory of Jo Cox.

It was great to take part and catch up with so many colleagues, friends, community activists, trade unionists as well as a great turnout from Morley Running Club! 🏃

Most importantly, events like this remind us that there’s no room for hate in our society. As Jo famously said, “we are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us.”

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there, and to all those who step up as father figures.

Today is a chance to celebrate the vital role they play in families and communities right across the country.

That’s why I’ve been calling on the Government to improve paternity leave and pay so that families get the fair support they deserve.

The age of access to social media will be lifted to 16 years old from 2027.

Thank you again to residents who have corresponded with me about this and given feedback at events I've held in Leeds South West & Morley. As well as giving your feedback directly to Government, I've also worked on this with the Education Select Committee to gather evidence on the proposed policy, including from the example set in Australia.

There were lots of strong opinions on this but, to be clear, I think this is the right move. The profit-driven algorithms that social media companies use to capture and keep our attention have advanced so much in recent years, that children are spending more time than ever growing up on devices. Many parents have told us they want a cultural reset to turn the corner.

There will of course be ways around it, exactly the same as other age-related restrictions already in law, but it's a new policy and one that says what kind of world we want our kids to grow up in. I think giving children 3 more years of their lives back before they typically access these addictive platforms is a good thing.

Social media platforms to be blocked from offering services to under-16s, marking a line in the sand and setting a new normal for future generations.
