☀️ A busy final week of the Summer recess! Here's a small snapshot of what I've been up to...

💼 Monday kicked off with a visit to Holocaust Centre North at the University of Huddersfield. I strongly encourage schools across Leeds South West and Morley to take advantage of the free learning programme the centre has on offer, which also covers travel costs. Pupils (and teachers) can learn more about the Holocaust through learning materials put together by real survivors who settled in our county after fleeing evil.

I’m proud that we have such a powerful facility dedicated to Holocaust education right here in West Yorkshire, and it was a privilege to meet the team behind it.

🗣️ I began Tuesday with a very busy surgery, this week at the constituency office right in the heart of Morley. Residents raised some challenging and sensitive issues, but I’m grateful to be in a position where I can support them. I hold my weekly surgeries at 13 different locations across the constituency and will post the September schedule here soon.

🎉 A short trip to the Corn Mill Lodge Hotel came next to celebrate the Farnley East get together. Fantastic turnout, massive well done to Armley Helping Hands and all the other volunteers that made it such an enjoyable event.

The big news of the day was the extension of the Pride in Place boundaries, which now include almost 1,000 extra households. Thanks to Jo and the rest of the board for helping me secure this much-needed boundary change.

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Thursday started bright and early for the first ever Parents Strike in Leeds City Centre. I’m proud to stand alongside The Dad Shift, Leeds Dads and the countless other parents across the UK calling for better parental rights. We heard some remarkable individual stories from parents, with one clear and common theme: two weeks is simply not enough.

👩‍🎓 After a meeting with some very important stakeholders on Friday morning, I spent the rest of the day catching up with our latest work experience student, Lily.

She completed a variety of tasks relating to supporting the work of an MP, and I was happy to hear she learned things that can’t always be taught in the classroom. Lily came equipped with an interest and knowledge of politics, so asked some very thoughtful and inquisitive questions about life in Westminster and what it takes to support my constituents.

🏢 It’s back to Parliament next week for me, and I’m very excited for the year ahead. My team and I have been working tirelessly on a number of campaigns which will directly affect people across Leeds South West and Morley in different ways, and I can’t wait to be in a position to reveal more.

📧 As always, please contact my office if you think we can assist you in any way.

Supporting local young people 📈

This week, I welcomed history-buff Lily as the latest local young person to complete work experience in my office this summer.

Lily came with a pre-established knowledge and interest of the work of an MP, which she has developed through studying A-level Politics. A basic understanding of what we do was an advantage, but I’m confident Lily learned things in the office that can’t always be taught in the classroom.

Throughout the week, Lily:

🗳️Met with Guy, my Senior Parliamentary Assistant to discuss all things policy, Parliament and Westminster
👥Helped plan community visits with my Communications Officer, Kai
📋Completed a mock task relating to a housing application with caseworker Ella
📆Assisted in arranging meetings with important stakeholders with the Office Manager, Ingrid
🤝Came with me on some trips out of the office relating to my work as your MP

Her curiosity and enthusiasm for politics really showed in her work, and it was a privilege to have her around.

I’m confident that Lily will go on to do great things, and I wish her all the best!

No bank holiday plans? 🤔

Morley Arts Festival is THIS weekend.

I caught up with Annie from Morley CIC Live earlier to discuss all things Morley Arts Festival, which returns this weekend thanks to the selfless work of local volunteers.

Go to one (or all!) of the days to see what's on offer. It's this sort of community spirit which keeps our town going, and it deserves to be recognised.

Bereaved families should never have to question whether their loved one is being treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

The Prime Minister’s commitment to regulating the funeral industry was welcome, but there is still much more to be done. That's why, along with Caroline Dinenage MP and fifty other MPs from across the House, I have written to the Health Secretary to call for immediate action.

I have also tabled an amendment to the Health Bill, which would give the Health Secretary power to establish a regulator.

The Government must act swiftly if Cody, Liam, Zoe and countless others across the UK are going to get the justice they deserve, and the outcome we have campaigned so long and hard for.

2 weeks is not enough. It’s time to extend paternity rights. 💪

Proud to stand alongside The Dad Shift, Leeds Dads, and thousands of other parents across the UK today calling for better paternity rights, which will give dads more time to be there when their families need them the most.

I’ve campaigned on this as your MP and joined so many others in calling for better parental rights. The Government’s review of these rights concludes at the end of this year but the economic, health and social benefits are already clear; so let’s give dads more time with their newborns.

Oyez, Oyez! We have a British Champion in Morley 🏆

Huge congratulations to Steven Holt, who was crowned British Champion at the LCTC British Town Crier Championships on Saturday.

Steven is a force of nature, and thoroughly deserves this recognition of the character and community spirit he brings to our town.

I look forward to seeing him continue to represent Morley with the same pride and enthusiasm in the years ahead. 👏

🚨 Important news for Old Farnley 🚨

We have been successful in extending the Pride in Place boundaries for the area known as ‘Farnley East.’ 2,400 more people will benefit directly from the £20 million fund.

The Tong Estate, the Stonecliffes, the Stonebridges, Farnley Hall Park, Farnley Community Centre, the entirety of the Whincovers and other areas are now included. Please see the new map in the comments below.

If you have any questions or feedback regarding Pride in Place, please use the link in the comments too.

It was one of the busiest of the summer, with a large number of important and sensitive issues. We'll action all the concerns as soon as possible.

Privileged to visit Holocaust Centre North at the University of Huddersfield today. They do most extraordinary work and welcome visitors of all ages to learn about the Holocaust, including from survivors who subsequently made their homes right here in Yorkshire.

I'd encourage all schools to take advance of their free learning programme, which covers the cost of school transport too.

Many thanks to The Jewish Leadership Council for organising the visit.
