STATEMENT: NEWCASTLE-UNDER-LYME LOCAL PLAN

As the three Reform UK borough councillors for Audley, we want to be clear about how we intend to vote when the Conservative-drafted Local Plan comes before Full Council on 8th July 2026.

We will be voting against it.

This Local Plan was not written by Reform UK. It was prepared under the previous Conservative-led administration, developed between 2021 and 2024, and submitted for examination before Reform UK took control of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council.

By the time residents voted for change, the process was already at its final stage. The Planning Inspector’s final report was issued on 19th May 2026, the day before the new Reform UK administration formally took office.

Reform UK did not draft this plan, did not choose these sites, and did not put Audley in this position.

But as Audley councillors, our first duty is to the residents we represent.

We have listened to local people across Audley, Bignall End, Wood Lane, Alsagers Bank, Miles Green, Park End and Halmer End. We know the strength of feeling about the sites affecting our villages, including the concerns around roads, schools, services, village character, green spaces and Green Belt land.

We will not pretend this is our plan. It is not.

We will not pretend Audley residents are wrong to be concerned. They are not.

And we will not vote for a plan that places further pressure on our local communities when we believe those concerns have not been properly answered.

We are also deeply concerned about Labour’s increased housing targets, which could mean more than 2,000 additional homes being forced on Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough in a future Local Plan. That risks even more pressure on greenfield and Green Belt land, including in and around Audley.

The Labour MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme should be standing up to his own Labour Government and demanding that these extra housing numbers are stopped before more of our green spaces are put at risk.

Audley residents deserve councillors who speak plainly, vote honestly, and put their community first.

That is what we intend to do.

Thank you, Audley Ward.

I’m incredibly grateful to have been elected alongside Patricia Harrison and Janice Sain-Reiners. Thank you to everyone who put their trust in us and supported our campaign.

But I also want to thank every resident - including those who didn’t vote for me. As your councillor, I will work hard for the whole community and do my best to be visible, approachable, and active across the ward.

This is a huge responsibility and one I don’t take lightly. Now the election is over, it’s time to get to work for Audley.

Thank you🙏🏼

Residents deserve transparency.

Many residents signed the “Save Our Borough” petition because they care about Newcastle-under-Lyme and don’t want our Borough swallowed up into a larger authority.

I signed it myself for that reason.

But people should know this was not simply a neutral residents’ petition. The website itself states it was promoted on behalf of the Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council Conservative Group.

Now, just before polling day, people who signed it have received a Conservative campaign email attacking Reform UK and Labour.

In my view, that is wrong.

People from all parties and none will have signed that petition in good faith because they care about our Borough. They did not necessarily sign up to receive party-political attack emails.

Protecting Newcastle-under-Lyme’s identity should not be used as a cover for Conservative campaigning.

For the record, I oppose Newcastle-under-Lyme being swallowed up into Stoke or any remote mega-council. But residents deserve honesty and transparency.

The leaflets say one thing. The voting record says another.

On 24 July 2024, Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council approved the Final Draft Local Plan 2040.

That plan included AB12, AB33, AB15 and AB2.

The official named vote shows both Nick Crisp and Ian Wilkes voted in favour.

Residents deserve the facts before they vote.
