Applications are open for the Mayor’s Events Fund.

£6 million is available over the next two years to grow the region’s events calendar, with a focus on signature events that celebrate North East culture, and community-led grassroots events emphasising local impact.

Grants from £10,000 to £500,000 will be awarded to new or existing events with growth potential that showcase a distinctive North East identity, attract audiences, generate economic and community benefits, and support local participation.

Expressions of Interest can be submitted until 26 November 2026 for events that will take place until 2029, with successful applicants supported to build a business case for funding.

We’ve announced a further £1.5 million investment in the Mayor’s Opportunity Fund, building on the success of the first four rounds which have supported over 100 community organisations across the North East.

The fund will continue to help trusted local charities and grassroots groups provide practical support to residents experiencing financial hardship, including food provision, community transport, digital inclusion projects, repair and reuse schemes, and improvements to community spaces.

With grants of up to £7,500 available through a new rolling programme, we’ll continue supporting the organisations making a difference in communities across our region.

A new low-interest loan scheme is set to help homeowners and private landlords improve the energy efficiency of properties across the North East.

The scheme will support measures such as insulation, heat pumps and solar technologies, helping create warmer homes, lower energy bills and reduced carbon emissions.

Delivered as part of our Warm Homes programme, the scheme will help more residents access the funding they need to make energy-saving improvements.

The Mayor has joined forces with Gateshead Council and Newcastle City Council to set out a bold new vision for the heart of Newcastle and Gateshead.

The draft Strategic Regeneration Framework could help unlock billions of pounds of investment over the next 25 years, creating opportunities for local people while building on everything that makes our city region unique.

From new homes and commercial space to culture, sport and better connections across the Tyne, it's a plan designed to help the heart of our region thrive for generations to come.

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness said: “We have amazing areas to live, work and study but now we need to go further. This plan is about creating places with even more great jobs, high-quality social housing, bustling high streets and well-connected neighbourhoods.

“Modern cities change all the time but as new buildings go up, we must bring forward areas that work for everybody – celebrating our North East heritage while creating places people want to live.”

Lower energy bills, warmer homes and greener living.

Today the Mayor has announced a new low-interest home energy improvement loan scheme to help more people across the North East make their homes warmer, healthier and cheaper to run.

Eligible measures include insulation, solar panels and heat pumps, supporting efforts to tackle fuel poverty and reduce carbon emissions.

The loans can be used to help spread the cost of eligible improvements over an agreed period.

This is another step towards making the North East the home of the green energy revolution and making sure local people benefit from it.
