💬 Getting more money into families’ pockets.

Our Advice in Schools and Community Settings programme is helping families across the North East access the support they’re entitled to – from benefits to wider financial advice. 🤝

By delivering support in trusted places like schools and local community spaces, we’re:

✅ Reaching families earlier
✅ Reducing stigma
✅ Making it easier to get help

So far, this approach has helped unlock more than £1.9m in extra income for local families. 📈

Real support, in the places people already go. That’s how we tackle child poverty and deliver for the North East. 📍

The programme is delivered by Citizens Advice & Durham County Council, working through schools, family hubs and community settings to reach families where they already are. 🗣️

Hear about the impact this programme is making in Durham alone. 👇🏻

Great to see progress on the new South Tyneside College site in the heart of South Shields.

Bringing education and training into our town centres is a key part of how we revitalise high streets – creating footfall, supporting local businesses and giving people more reasons to visit.

This investment is about more than a new building. It’s about connecting people to skills, jobs and opportunities, while helping town centres thrive for the future.

Getting online can change everything. 📲

For John, BRIC: Blyth Resource & Initiative Centre’s IT classes have helped him connect with family, build confidence online and feel part of the digital world. 🌍

Thanks to the Mayor’s Opportunity Fund, more older residents across the North East are gaining the skills they need to stay connected. 🤝

Tackling exclusion, overcoming the cost of living barrier, and improving connectivity. 🔗

Hudson Road Primary is one of 23 schools across Sunderland and Northumberland that have been fitted with energy saving solar panels, funded through the Mayor’s Renewables Fund, and powered by £700,000 from GB Energy.

The Sunderland primary school is already seeing the benefits, with solar panels now generating green, locally produced energy on site, cutting their energy bills by approximately £4,000 annually.

The children from the school told the Mayor and Sunderland City Council Leader Cllr Eynon that they want to spend money saved on more arts and craft materials, opportunities for reading, and toys like hula hoops for playtime.

Season finale, Tonight at 9pm

Channel 5’s The Fortune, is about a woman who is left a huge inheritance by a man she’s never met. But it also tells a story of the North East’s growing screen industry.

Produced by Byker-based, Lonesome Pine, and filmed across 21 locations across the North East of England including Teesside, it provided work for 48 local suppliers, and experience for local people with 63% of the production crew from the region.

The North East screen industry is growing, and we’re making sure that means more jobs for local people.
