This weeks Wise Wednesday is about our four legged friends of the moor.

Livestock and ponies roam free across the common, but they haven’t yet mastered road safety.

Help prevent issues by driving with moor care, be wise to your surroundings and don’t pet or feed the animals.

Petting and feeding not only poses as health issues but also encourages the animals to linger near roads where they hope to gain attention.

Be sure to enjoy the moor this Bank Holiday with moor care!

We are within a High Wildfire risk period.

Leave the BBQ at home and have a picnic instead.

Enjoy a campfire crackle from your phone, not in reality.

Park with care not to block access, limit roads or block gates.

Keep dogs on leads, while the lambs are appearing and the birds are nesting.

Leave no trace and take your litter home.

This landscape is for all, but all have a duty to protect it.

Fix it Friday to help repair nature.

Rangers, volunteers and land owners work tirelessly repairing fire pits.

This task takes time, and is something that shouldn’t be needed.

We are in a high fire risk period, fires are not permitted on Dartmoor no matter the temptation may be for a night under the stars with a camp fire.

With better weather on its way (that’s what the weather man says!) combined with a Bank Holiday the desire to get out is strong.

If you do come to the moor, remember these key messages;

- dogs on leads
- no fires or BBQs
- take all your litter home
- give livestock space
- camp within permitted areas

All these points are there to protect and preserve what makes Dartmoor great.

Tractor runs are a common feature over the moor, and what a spectacular back drop it is.

The runs support various local and national charities raising much needed funds.

It brings together those with an interest in tractors as well as allowing commoners and farmers a chance to get together supporting mental health and wellbeing.

Cattle are being turned out onto the moor, many with young stock at their feet.

Like any new mum, protecting their young is key. This means that cows are on high alert and could easily be spooked.

Within the herd a small crèche may develop where one cow looks after the calf’s while the others graze so at times the calf’s may appear to be separated.

Be sure to give cattle plenty of space, be aware of your surroundings.

This week is all about Mental Health Awareness.

It goes without saying the impact and power of time outside does for our physical and mental health.

Take time for your mental health, but respect others as you don’t know what battles they may be facing.
