The MRT Challenge North follows the same 160-mile route from Hawes to Kirk Yetholm and races under the same conditions as the Challenger North. Beginning from Hardraw in North Yorkshire, competitors have a time limit of 90 hours to get to the finish line at Kirk Yetholm. The trail crosses some of the most beautiful and difficult terrains in Britain including; the Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland National Park, Hadrian’s Wall, and the Cheviots; finishing at the Scottish Borders.

The MRT Challenge North is a special edition of the Montane Spine Challenger South and North and has been created exclusively for active Mountain Rescue members. It provides the MRT an event where team members can compete against each other along the Pennine Way. The creation of the race allows serving members to have their own race and receive a subsidised entry (to cover costs for food and tracker hire) and in return a number of MRT provide vehicles and crew along the race route.

Wednesday evening's regular training this week was a technical workshop on a difficult extraction from a gully descent at The Wainstones. This involved careful hand-over-hand movement of the stretcher traversing the foot of the crag on a tight path supported by a back-up rope. The stretcher was then transferred to a second back up rope system for the descent to flat ground, where the exercise was terminated.
A bonus was the great views of the sun setting over the Wainstones.

CALL OUT 20/2026
Monday 25th May (0000hrs)
The team were contacted by North Yorkshire Police (NYP) to provide assistance with the search for a vulnerable person who was possibly in the coastal area between Staithes and Runswick Bay. The team deployed both Land Rovers and the Control vehicle to Runswick Bay bank top car park with other members in their own vehicles. The first members at RV were quickly deployed to do a hasty search of Runswick Bay area with personnel from HM Coastguard. Another party were tasked to search the Cleveland Way from Runswick Bay towards Staithes. The team were also preparing the drone for its first operational flight when we were informed that the Police helicopter (NPAS) would be on scene.
As the team were deploying a further party to Port Mulgrave in a Land Rover, information came from NPAS that a heat source had been detected on the Cleveland Way. The four person party on the Cleveland Way were soon on scene to confirm they had found the person. The Land Rover was redeployed to get as close as possible to the find site .The required kit from the Rover was walked approximately 400m to the site. The person was assessed and treated by the team ,then they were loaded onto the stretcher in the casualty bag and wheeled back to the Rover with assistance from HM Coastguard and NYP . The stretcher was loaded into the stripped out Rover and transferred approximately 850m to the waiting ambulance in Hinderwell.
We wish the casualty all the best.
15 team members were involved for approximately 5.5 hours
This incident was a great example of multiple agencies working together to achieve the best possible outcome, finding the person alive.

Last week was a busy period for the team with 5 call outs in 5 days along with 2 full days of supporting the Boltby Bash MTB event. Either side of this period, the team had training on the Wednesday evenings. On the first Wednesday, the session was an exercise on steep ground in Newton Wood. A casualty was rescued from a location where extraction was only possible upwards on non technical steep ground using a 2 line bell stretcher raise withtwo rescuers.
The following Wednesday was an exercise at Scaling Dam involving both water and land based parties. The scenario was to find 6 paddle boarders who were missing. One person was located and rescued from the water with others at various locations on land around the lake.
Both sessions allowed the team to practice situations which are not commonly encountered in our search and rescue call outs but we are prepared for them.

CALL OUT 15/2026
Saturday 16th May (1235hrs)
Team members on stage 4 at Boltby Bash were informed of an injured mountain bike rider who was unable to move following a fall. The personnel at stage 4 deployed to the casualty site near the top of the stage with appropriate medical kit.
Following a medical assessment, the person had a shoulder injury and required strong analgesics to relieve the pain.
Due to the location , the person was evacuated on the mountain rescue stretcher down a steep slope using a back up rope to a nearby track . On the track the stretcher wheel was attached, allowing the stretcher to be wheeled down to the local farm yard.
Due to no estimated time of arrival for the road ambulance, a Land Rover was stripped out to allow the stretcher to be loaded into the vehicle and transferred to the medical tent on the event field. Not long after the casualty was in the medical tent the ambulance arrived.
We hope the casualty makes a speedy recovery and is back on the bike again. Thanks to his colleagues for their assistance in transferring the stretcher down to the track.
The team were involved for approx 3 hours

BOLTBY BASH WEEKEND
Over the weekend the team provided medical cover for the Boltby Bash mountain bike event, around the village of Boltby. The weekend consists of practice day on Saturday and race day on Sunday with around 1300 competitors. There were a small number of minor injuries, along with a more serious shoulder injury on each day which required an ambulance to take the casualties to hospital.( further information in call out posts)
Two team members , Becky and Ollie, were participating in the event. Following the completion of their practice run on Saturday they then helped the team with the call out. On Sunday they were willing to pause their participation mid race to assist on stage 2, fortunately there were sufficient numbers on scene. They were able to continue with their race.
Thanks to support members, Dom and Peter for doing the bucket collection on Sunday afternoon
A busy weekend for the team, 3 call outs with 2 long days of medical cover.
