𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐟 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐝𝐚𝐲!

Yesterday, we headed over to Harrogate for a full area away day, bringing together teams from across our service areas - including Property, Health & Safety, and Cleaning & Catering.

It was a fantastic day filled with insights, inspiration, and connections. Some standout moments included:
✅ Hearing from Yorkshire Air Ambulance, our chosen charity for the year, and learning more about the incredible, life-saving work they do across the county
✅ Celebrating staff development through powerful stories from colleagues sharing their career journeys within the council
✅ And, of course, the ever-popular end-of-day quiz, which is always a highlight!

Events like this are a great opportunity to connect with colleagues we don’t work with day-to-day, share ideas, and gain valuable insight from different teams across our service.
Being part of North Yorkshire Council means we benefit from opportunities like this and it’s something we’re really proud to be part of!

We’re thrilled to share some fantastic news from the NYES Catering team!

Helene Humphrey, Cook and Manager at County Hall, was recently invited to attend The King’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace!

Helene was nominated by Head of NYES Catering and Cleaning, Lee Ramsay, who praised her as 'pivotal to the success of the canteen at County Hall… a dedicated team member who is always smiling, helpful, and a true asset to our service.'

Speaking about her special day, Helene said:
'It was a great day, the weather was beautiful and it was an honour to be picked!'

Helene shared the experience with Jason Oliver, one of our NYES Catering Area Managers.

Throughout the week, we’ve been sharing tips, quizzes and resources to support No Falls at Work Week but it’s just as important to understand why this matters.

Although ladder safety can sometimes feel like a low-risk issue in schools, working at height carries very real dangers.

In this video, Abbi shares the story of her father, Jason Anker MBE, who was left paralysed from the waist down at just 24 years old after a 10-foot fall from an unsecured ladder.

It’s a stark reminder that what might seem like a quick, routine task can have life-changing consequences.

We’re proud to be supporting No Falls at Work Week, an important national campaign championed by our NYES Health and Safety Team.

At first glance, this might not feel hugely relevant to schools… but take a moment to think about it:
➡️ How often do staff balance on chairs or unsteady stools to put up displays?
➡️ How many times is a caretaker asked to retrieve a ball from a roof or gutter?

These might seem like small, everyday tasks, but they come with real risks, and unfortunately, serious consequences.

Falls from height remain the leading cause of workplace fatalities in the UK, with 35 deaths recorded in 2024/25 alone.

Over the coming days, we’ll be sharing quick videos and quizzes to help you stay confident, compliant, and safe when it comes to ladder use.

𝐀 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐜𝐂𝐚𝐢𝐧!

Our NYES Catering team recently had the opportunity to visit McCain’s UK headquarters and potato factory in Scarborough.

As a valued local supplier for our school meals, we were keen to gain a deeper understanding of McCain’s farm‑to‑fork journey, including their approach to responsible sourcing, food production, sustainability, and quality.

Going behind the scenes, we suited up and stepped onto the factory floor, following the journey of the humble potato from field to finished product — a great insight into the care and processes behind the food served in our schools every day.
