There is an opportunity to join the local Community Speed Watch and address the pressing issue of speeding in our area.

Excessive speeds near Horsendale School and late-night revving of performance vehicles on Sundays are all too common, disturbing residents.

The Community Speed Watch allows residents, in partnership with police, to monitor speeds using detection devices. Primarily a data gathering and awareness raising initiative, its aim is reducing speeding rather than prosecutions.

Claims that this is a police responsibility miss the point - sporadic enforcement is ineffective and motorists know it unlikely they will be caught. Studies show volunteers' speed monitoring itself makes most drivers slow down.

Success is a reduction is speed on the estate not the number of individuals prosecuted. Success is antisocial drivers knowing that there neighbours are not going to tolerate it any longer. Success is where this area becomes an undesirable place to check your 0-60 times because there are people observing.

I hope you will consider joining this effort.

Volunteers sought for Community Speed Watch in Broxtowe North

Are you fed up with speeding vehicles in your community? Could you spare an hour a week to help tackle this issue and are aged 18 or over?

Police are looking to set up new Community Speed Watch (CSW) schemes in Broxtowe North and are asking for volunteers to get in touch if they are interested in being trained to conduct speed checks on streets in your area.

The scheme aims to raise awareness of speeding within communities and the affects it has on the people who live there by providing education to drivers. Community Speed Watch will not be considered as enforcement.

Police will train volunteers to operate a speed gun and note down the details of speeding motorists. We will follow up by sending letters to the registered keepers of offending vehicles asking for their assistance in keeping speeds down in the local community. Repeat offenders could face targeted speed enforcement action by Nottinghamshire Police.

As a beaver scout leader at 1st Nuthall Scouts, Cubs & Beavers Group I am super excited that a district squirrels drey is opening on our doorstep. Squirrels are the latest addition to the scouting family for boys and girls aged 4-6 years old. I know the squirrel leaders really well and they've got an inspiring programme of activities planned. I've been able to lend my support by directing young people off my waiting list for beavers into squirrels so they can start their scouting journey even younger!

Beauvale District Scouts is excited to announce the opening of a new District Squirrels Drey for boys and girls ages 4-6. Starting later this month, the Beauvale Squirrels Drey aims to teach critical life skills to children through engaging hands-on experiences. Each weekly session will be packed with opportunities for your child to earn badges, make new friends and learn important values like respect, responsibility and resilience.

1st Nuthall Scouts, Cubs & Beavers Group is proud to support by offering our meeting venue on Monday nights to help the group get established.

Today I paid a visit to the Whaley Bridge Men's Shed, which is located in a corner of a historic canal warehouse. I was impressed by how they've adapted the space, which is even smaller than what we have available at the Basil Russell workshop, to meet their needs. At any given time, there can have 6-8 people busy at work on various woodworking and repair projects.

Given the success of the Whaley Bridge initiative, I'm increasingly optimistic about the possibility of launching our own community shed in Nuthall. We likely have enough interested people and sufficient workshop space at Basil Russell to make a go of it.

While my visit to Whaley Bridge further motivates me to starting a Nuthall Shed, we unfortunately need to press pause on the concept for the time being.

As many know, we are currently rebuilding a section of damaged wall on the Watnall Road side of the Basil Russell park. This requires us to use the entire workshop as storage space for displaced equipment and materials over the time if reconstruction.

As soon as the wall repairs are complete, I look forward to revisiting the potential to convert the workshop into a dedicated Nuthall Shed.

This delay gives us more time to organise interested members and fine-tune plans so we can hit the ground running with the program once space frees up again after the wall project.

Please do continue reaching out if you’re keen to participate when the time comes.

One community endeavour feeding another, literally... Kimberley community garden produce is being donated as ingredients to the Long Cloud Cafe - a free community cafe on the Basil Russell playing fields. Just brilliant. Well done all!

Check out Basil Russell pitches shining brightly in the sun and a home win as well. Absolutely brilliant!

I've a smile from ear to ear by the concept of a bike bus for getting children to school safely, and it offers a multitude of benefits. Not only does it alleviate traffic congestion and reduce harmful emissions, but it also promotes physical activity and a sense of camaraderie among the students, making the daily commute an adventure. Who wouldn't want to be part of this enjoyable and eco-friendly journey to school?

Over the past few months, I've been working on an idea to transform the empty workshop at Basil Russell Park into a Men's Shed.

A Men's Shed is a place for woodworking, metalworking, crafting, and restoration. Imagine creating planters, bird boxes, and other wooden items that brighten the Parish Council's parks and other open spaces. Another day might be mending or repairing things, e.g. bikes, engines, garden tools or model making.

Men's Sheds have another purpose. They are about improving men's mental health and overall well-being. Men's Sheds help reduce loneliness, isolation and, most importantly, they’re fun. Men typically shy away from joining social groups, especially if they're mostly made up of ladies. They use fewer community health services and miss out on health-related activities leading to a disparity of access to health and wellbeing services. If I can make this happen, I genuinely believe it will enrich our community's mental health and well-being.

I am reaching out to connect with people who can help me make this a reality. I've secured the support of a couple of fellow parish councillors who are exploring avenues for funding.

Have you been involved in a Men's Shed committee or participated in one elsewhere? Your insights hold immense value! Contact me via email at [email protected] or leave a message with the Council clerk on 0115 951 9717 for me to call you back.

My goal is to create a proposal to show the Parish Council that this idea is viable and can improve our community's health and well-being. With your narratives and support, I am confident we can turn this idea into reality.

Please note that this is still at the idea/proposal stage. We'll seek enthusiastic volunteers to join the committee and collaborate with the council to bring the Men's Shed to fruition upon approval by the council.
