An off-duty police officer helped to apprehend two suspected shoplifters after stopping to refuel his car.

The officer was on the forecourt of Tesco Express on Nottingham Road, Mansfield, when he saw two people running out with laundry products at around 11.45am on Wednesday 27 May.

After checking in with staff and paying for his fuel, the officer drove towards the town centre, soon catching sight of both suspects and calling for back-up.

He then chased the suspects across Fisher Park, where he was able to detain them with the help of uniformed colleagues.

Two men, aged 40 and 33, were arrested on suspicion of theft.

Inspector Katie Eustace, district commander for Mansfield, said: "This was a great bit of work by an off-duty officer who didn’t think twice before putting himself in harm’s way.

"Tackling shoplifting is a priority in Mansfield, so anyone committing offences can expect to come face-to-face with a police officer – even when they aren’t at work."

A prolific thief and burglar has been returned to prison.

Robert Sisson, 37, was caught on CCTV on the evening of 17 March this year as he helped himself to a TV from a block of flats in Garfield Road, Radford.

Sisson, who has multiple previous convictions for theft and burglary offences, was later identified from the CCTV footage and arrested.

While in custody, he refused to be interviewed by our officers or explain his actions.

He later pleaded guilty to burglary.

He also admitted two shop thefts on 23 and 28 March, as well as stealing an electric scooter on 4 April.

Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday, 27 May, Sisson, of Gabrielle Close, Nottingham, was jailed for 876 days – just short of two years and five months.

PC Imran Ahmed said: "Sisson is a prolific offender who is no stranger to prison.

"He has been offered multiple chances in the past to change his ways, but so far has shown little sign of doing so.

"For as long as he continues with this kind of offending, we will continue to arrest, charge and bring him before the courts."

Hundreds of spectators gathered to watch expertly-trained police dogs show off their skills as Nottinghamshire Police's fun days returned for another summer of family entertainment.

The scenario was one of several played out during three action-filled Dog Section displays during the first event of the year at the Forest Recreation Ground, which attracted an estimated 1,300 excitable visitors.

After last summer's amazing events, where thousands of people enjoyed the fun on offer, we are back with three more action-packed days, featuring more activities for everyone to enjoy.

Previously known as the 'Mini Police Fun Days', the events have been rebranded this year as 'Police Family Fun Day', but will continue to feature the same great entertainment for all.

Visitors can expect a day full of hands-on fun and plenty of friendly police teams ready to chat and show you what they do, so members of the public can discover what it's like inside policing.

Watch police dogs chase and take down 'criminals', try on real police uniform, and sit behind the wheel of a police car and activate the sirens.

Meet the off-road bikes and drone units, dust for fingerprints with forensics, and put your reflexes to the test in the reaction-time challenge.

Between the displays, games, and other activities, officers and staff will be available to speak with parents about crime prevention, pose for photos, and will be joined by the Blood Bikes charity.

When and where?

All events are free and open to everyone between 11am and 3pm:

• Broadgate Park, Beeston – Saturday, 13 June

• Titchfield Park, Mansfield – Saturday, 25 July

• Bracebridge Recreation Ground, Worksop – Saturday, 12 September

Sergeant Josh Lee-Taylor, of our engagement team, said: "Our fun days were a huge hit last year and we're so excited to bring them back.

"These events are really important to help us engage with communities, young people, and children across the county so that everyone feels confident talking to us.

"Grab your friends and family, whether you want to learn something new or see our police dogs in action, come and join us for an awesome day out!"

Emergency services were called to Balderton Lake, off Heron Way, New Balderton at 2.35pm on Thursday 28 May following reports a man had entered the water.

Nottinghamshire Police, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, and East Midlands Ambulance Service attended the scene and a 19-year-old man was recovered from the water. He had been at the lake with friends, was treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken to hospital.

We are sad to inform that he has not survived. His family have been informed and officers are supporting them at this deeply distressing time.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

Chief Inspector for Newark, Clive Collings, said:

"This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are solely with this young man's family.

"We recognise this will be very upsetting for the local community and we encourage people to access support if they need it.

"During hot weather we know people want to keep cool but open waters are exceptionally dangerous as there is no way of telling what's beneath the surface."

Group Manager Charlotte Weatherall-Smith from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said:

“On behalf of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of this young man at this incredibly difficult time. This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts remain with everyone affected.

“Incidents like this are a stark reminder of the dangers that open water can present. Even on warm and sunny days, water temperatures can be much colder than they appear, and entering the water can lead to cold water shock, which can be sudden, severe and potentially fatal.

“If you see someone in difficulty in the water, call 999 immediately and ask for the fire service. Encourage the person to float on their back to help them stay calm and conserve energy. For your own safety, please do not enter the water or attempt a rescue yourself, as this can put additional lives at risk.”

If you spot someone in open waters call 999 and provide the fire service with an accurate location using what3words or landmarks.

We are investigating a break-in at a building site and have released images of a man we would like to trace.

Around £3,000 worth of tools were stolen from a property that is undergoing renovation work in Bath Street, near Sneinton Market.

A window was smashed to gain entry at some point over the early May Bank Holiday Weekend (May 1-4).

We believe the man in this image will be able to assist with our enquiries.

PC Ben Cunningham, who is leading the investigation, said: "Having reviewed local CCTV, we have identified a man seen wheeling a large bin down the street in the vicinity of the break-in.

"It is important we speak to the man as part of our inquiries into this report.

"We appreciate the images are not of the best quality but we are hopeful the man will recognise himself and come forward.

"Equally, if you think you know who he is from his clothing or footwear, please get in touch."

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting 26*257498.
