Last night was the final drill night for FF Baker whose time with us has come to an end following a promotion in his primary employment.

Joining in the summer of 2020 FF Baker quickly established himself as a capable, skilful firefighter with a drive to learn and improve. His calmness, knowledge, and enthusiasm has made him an asset to the station and wider brigade during his 6 years with us and has helped him thrive in his role over the years.

As a popular and highly respected member of the crew his loss will be keenly felt however we look forward to our paths crossing in the future as FF Baker will continue his firefighting career with our neighbouring station, Sidmouth!

We hope youโ€™ll join us in thanking him for his commitment to the community and wishing him well in both his primary employment and his future with DSFRS! ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿš’

๐ŸŒŠ Along with multiple resources in the East Devon area we have been incredibly busy over the 16 hours and have carried numerous rescues from vehicles in flood water.

Although the rain has subsided water levels remain high. Please do not put yourselves or others at risk by driving though flood water no matter how shallow it may seem.

Everyone at Station 41 would like to wish you a Happy and Safe New Year!

We ended 2025 and started 2026 in busy fashion having been mobilised 3 times in the last 24.

Last night at 1903 we were mobilised to investigate smoke in the area of Gosford/Pattesons Cross. Once in the area it become apparent that, due to a combination of factors, a very thick layer of smoke was covering the dual carriageway and surrounding areas creating extremely poor visibility. We requested the attendance of police to close the roads however almost immediately we were notified of a multi-vehicle collision on the A30 in the affected area. Along with crews from Honiton Fire Station and Middlemoor Fire Station Red Watch we attended the scene and assisted police and the ambulance service with making the scene safe and ensuring all casualties were safely out their vehicles and receiving medical care.

Whilst dealing with this incident a crew from Danes Castle attended the area to located the fire causing the smoke and extinguished it.

This morning at 0916 we attended an RTC in the Larkbeare area with Middlemoor Blue Watch.

Thereโ€™s been lots going on since our last post.

We have taken part in multiple training exercises sharpening skills including BA, Decontamination, and Pumps and Ladders.

Multiple crew members have attended skill re-qualification courses, and our newest recruit passed his BA assessment allowing him to make up numbers and take a full part operational incidents.

In November the crew were mobilised 20 times to a range of incidents including RTCโ€™s, Derelict Building Fires, Animal Rescues, and Vehicle Fires.

So far in December we have attended 7 incidents consisting of:

1 x Assisting Ambulance
1 x Carbon Dioxide Leak
1 x Generator On Fire
1 x Dangerous Structure
2 x RTCโ€™s
1 x Commercial/Retail Property Fire (False Alarm)

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿš’ Welcome aboard to our newest recruit FF Jubb who has just passed his 12 day initial training course.

He still has a lot to learn over the coming months and a lot of additional training courses to complete however he can now ride the appliance and attend incidents to gain vital experience!

Here he is at drill night demonstrating his pump operating skills off station lifting water from the River Otter and supplying 2 attack jets ๐Ÿš’

We would just like to thank all the members of the community that helped to raise a lot of money for The Fire Fighters Charity by making use of the clothes recycling bank outside the fire station! It is much appreciated!
Could we ask that if the clothing bank is full that you take your bags home and wait for it to be emptied? Ottery St Mary Fire Station, like most in Devon & Somerset, is crewed by an on-call group of firefighters that give up time away from their families and employers to respond to emergencies in their communities. This should not include clearing split and ripped bags of clothing that have been dumped in the area!

Thanks for your understanding and continued support!
All the team at Ottery St Mary Fire Station.

๐Ÿš’ We have seen an increase in mobilisations in recent weeks ranging from Property Fires, RTCโ€™s and Vehicle Fires to Crop and Heathland Fires.

This is always a busy time of year with an increase in traffic on the road and the drier weather conditions.

We have also attended two incidents today including an explosion at a property in Otterton alongside a wide range of other local stations. Full details can be found using the link below.

We currently have multiple appliances in attendance at an incident following a suspected gas explosion at a detached property on Ladram Road near Otterton at around 11.30am this morning. The property has been completely destroyed and was well alight on arrival. Crews split the incident into two sect...

Itโ€™s been a while since our last post so a quick update ๐Ÿš’

We have recently welcomed FF Jackson to the crew who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience having previously been a crew member at Wellington and Colyton fire stations. He is also a Wholetime Fire Fighter in London Fire Brigade and brings great knowledge and enthusiasm to the role.

We have been busy in the last few weeks with drill nights, training courses, exercises, and incidents. The crew have all passed the annual fitness testing and excelled in many areas exceeding the beyond the expected level.

We have been mobilised 7 times in the last week including a lorry fire today on the A30. The engine and cab were well alight on our arrival. The Ottery crew carried out the initial attack with jets and were able to fully extinguish the fire with BA, Small Tools, and Environmental protection once crews from Middlemoor Fire Station and the water carrier from Danes Castle Fire Station - Exeter arrived. Both carriage ways were closed while crews extinguished the fire however both have since reopened.
