🌞 Your Oxford photography competition: Summer memories edition 🌻

The Your Oxford photography competition is back for another month, and this time, we'd love to see your best snaps from this summer.

The winning photo will appear as the banner image on our page until the next competition. We'll also share a selection of the best images on our Facebook and Instagram.

To enter, simply send us a direct message with your photo. Please read the terms and conditions linked below to ensure your photo fits within the guidelines.

Entries close midnight Tuesday 8 September, with the winner notified by direct message.

A major milestone has been reached for Oxford Burial Meadow with the appointment of Blakedown Landscapes as principal contractor. The new 17-acre site will provide much needed burial space while creating a peaceful meadow with wildflowers, trees, paths and enhanced biodiversity.

⚠️ Yellow weather warning for Oxford from 3am Wednesday 26 August to 10pm Thursday 27 August

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms and heavy rain on 26 and 27 August 2026.

- there is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
- there is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
- where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
- spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
- there is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
- there is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads

📍 Next steps announced for Oxford’s new Burial Meadow 🌳

Blakedown Landscapes has been appointed as Principal Contractor to deliver the new Oxford Burial Meadow, following planning approval being gained in April of this year.

With more than five decades of experience, Blakedown Landscapes is an award-winning landscaping and civil engineering specialist with a proven track record of delivering high-quality projects across the UK, including nationally significant public landscapes and sensitive heritage and environmental sites.

Oxford Burial Meadow is a new 17-acre site off Oxford Road that will provide a sustainable and respectful burial space for the city’s growing needs. The site, currently used for farming, will be transformed into a peaceful new public meadow incorporating burial use.

The development will include new tree planting, wildflower meadows, paths and seating, creating a tranquil environment for visitors while also enhancing local biodiversity.

The Oxford Burial Meadow will be managed by ODS’s burial services team, and is expected to provide capacity for around 45 years of burials, helping address the city’s shortage of burial plots. The exact number of burial spaces will be subject to planning conditions.

Works are expected to start on site in autumn, and be complete in spring of next year.

🎶❤️ £20,000 Grassroots Music Fund launches

We’ve launched a £20,000 Grassroots Music Fund to support musicians, promoters and live music venues across the city.

🚌🖼️ City Sightseeing Oxford and Museum of Oxford partner for reduced ticket offer

The new offer includes unlimited hop on, hop off bus travel for the duration of your ticket and a museum visit that can be used within three months.

We have launched a Grassroots Music Fund, with £20,000 allocated during the 2026/2027 financial year. Funding for the grant was secured at Budget Council, and will be split equally into two strands.

- Venues: Two grants of £5000 each will be made available for music venues
- Musicians and promoters: Around 10 grants averaging £1,000 each will be available for musicians and promoters

The funding aims to help venues support musicians and promoters, by providing rehearsal and performance space and reducing costs and other support as appropriate.

The fund also aims to reduce costs for musicians and promoters to enable more musical activity in the city.

Applications for the new funding pot opened on Monday 17 August, and the deadline for applications to be received is 9am on Monday 12 October.
