It’s important to dispose of waste safely — especially vapes, batteries and small electricals.

🔋 These items may look harmless, but they can be dangerous if placed in bins. When batteries, vapes or electricals are crushed inside bin lorries or at recycling centres, their hidden or loose batteries can spark fires. This puts crews, residents, vehicles and facilities at risk, and also prevents valuable materials from being recovered and recycled.

Please remember:
❌ Do not place vapes, batteries or small electrical items in your bins
✅ Recycle these items separately using dedicated collections and drop-off points

Recycling Vehicle Fire in Blackbird Leys ⚠️

This morning, one of our recycling vehicles experienced a fire in Blackbird Leys after an item was incorrectly placed in the recycling bin. Following advice from the Fire Brigade, the crew emptied the waste to prevent the fire from spreading 🚛

We’re pleased to confirm that no crew members were injured.

Our highways team has now finished clearing the ejected waste, and our streets team is carrying out a litter pick and sweep to ensure the area is left clean and safe 🧹

At this stage, we are hopeful that collections in the Blackbird Leys ward will not be affected, as the team is working to adjust rounds so services can continue as normal.

A big thank you to the crew and the Fire Brigade for their quick and professional response. Incidents like this highlight the importance of disposing of waste correctly to keep everyone safe 🙏

🍽️ What goes in your caddy
Tea bags, coffee grounds, fruit peel, leftovers, meat, fish, bones — even cooking oil (in a plastic bottle). If it’s food, it can go in.

🛍️ How to line it
Use a compostable liner, plastic bags (no black plastic), newspaper — or leave it unlined.

⏰ Weekly collections
Food waste is picked up every week, helping prevent smells.

⚡ Where it goes
Oxford’s food waste is sent to the anaerobic digestion plant in Cassington, where it becomes biogas to power homes and fertiliser for local farmland.

📉 Why it matters
UK households throw away 4.4 million tonnes of edible food each year, worth £17.5 billion and responsible for 16 million tonnes of greenhouse gases. Reducing food waste is one of the quickest ways to save money and help the planet 🌍

Our next tip for is all about recycling small electricals and household batteries - and the good news is, you can do it right at the kerbside in Oxford 🗑

🔌 Small electricals
Pop items like toasters, hairdryers, kettles, chargers and cables into a clear bag and place on top of your green rubbish bin or blue recycling bin for weekly collection.

🔋 Household batteries
Place batteries in a clear bag on top of your blue recycling bin lid for bi-weekly collection.

🏘️ Live in a flat with shared bins?
You can still recycle your small electricals and batteries - drop them off at a nearby collection point. Visit Recycle Your Electricals to find the closest spot.

Recycling small electricals and batteries keeps valuable materials in use and prevents harmful items from ending up in the bin.

To kick off , our first tip is all about managing bulky waste responsibly ♻️

Before throwing items away, think reuse or repair:

💚 Donate items in good condition to local charities (some offer kerbside collection)
🤲 Pass things on to friends, family or neighbours
🔨 Visit a repair café to fix and refresh items

If it can’t be reused:
🚛 Book a household bulky waste collection
🏘️ Take items to a Household Waste Recycling Centre, ideal if you live in a flat with shared bins or want to recycle items sooner
