Want to find out more about progress with the new East Surrey council?

The shadow authority in Surrey is now making plans for the new East Surrey Council, ready for when it takes over the delivery of services on 1 April 2027. We have lots of information about what the Shadow Authority is, when it is meeting and key decisions being made on the Future Surrey website at www.surreylgrhub.gov.uk/homepage/29/east-surrey-council.

Here, you can browse dates and times for future meetings.

You can also find links for meeting papers (published at least 1 week before the meeting) and watch webcasts of the meetings live. The webcasts are available to view online for six months afterwards, so you can catch up with the latest discussions.

The next meeting for the East Surrey Shadow Cabinet Executive is today.

Understanding the dangers of swimming in Mercers Lake

Following recent concerns of antisocial behaviour, damage and public order offences, we’re urging residents and visitors not to congregate at, or swim in, Mercers Lake, Nutfield.

While the recent hot weather might make taking a dip tempting, it’s important to understand the dangers of swimming in open water, including in local lakes.

Open water and lakes are usually much colder than water in a pool, which could seriously affect children and adults’ heart rates and ability to move and breathe.

Falling into freezing water can also result in shock which can lead to panic and drowning.

Open water like lakes can contain abandoned items under the water like tyres and containers that swimmers could injure themselves on, affecting your swimming ability.

Swimmers in lakes and other open water can get caught in plant life and seaweed, which could cause them to be dragged under.

There may be strong underwater currents that increase your risk of drowning.
