Its absolutely bustling in Ossett today. The suns out and the scarecrows are lined up! Well done to all the fantastic volunteers who work so incredibly hard because without them, events like this wouldn’t happen.

The Deputy Mayor, Cllr Ashton, has just arrived with her consort and the judging will happen later this afternoon.

I’m really pleased to support the launch of the new ‘Weekend with Us’ fostering scheme here in Wakefield.

We know that not everyone is in a position to become a full-time foster carer, but that doesn’t mean they can’t make a huge difference to a child’s life. Giving just one weekend a month can provide a young person with stability, new experiences and another trusted relationship they can rely on.

As Deputy Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, I’m particularly pleased that we’re looking at new and more flexible ways to support children already in our care, while opening fostering up to people who may never previously have thought it was possible for them.

There are people right across our district with the time, compassion and life experience to offer something incredibly valuable to a young person. I’d encourage anyone who thinks they could offer one weekend a month to find out more.

A weekend might not seem like much, but to a child or young person, the difference it makes could be enormous.

The Government has lost control of our borders, and the British public is being told to accept it.

People are right to be angry and have every right to protest peacefully. The Government should listen to their concerns instead of dismissing them.

Reform UK has set out a tougher approach to illegal Channel crossings: intercept unauthorised boats, bring everyone on board to safety, and pursue returns for those with no right to remain.

The Government has had enough excuses and enough chances. Britain needs secure borders, clear rules and leaders willing to enforce them 🇬🇧

⬇️ HOME TO SCHOOL TRANSPORT ⬇️

Labour’s reaction to this consultation takes some nerve.

Wakefield Labour approved the review in July 2025. Now Labour politicians are attacking the very process their own administration set in motion, while leaving parents worried that their children’s transport is about to disappear.

Parents deserve a straight answer. The consultation concerns discretionary transport provision. It is not a proposal to scrap the council’s statutory duty to provide eligible children with home to school transport. Anyone suggesting otherwise should explain exactly which proposal they mean.

As Deputy Portfolio Holder for Children and Young People, I take the concerns raised by families seriously. We must listen to them, examine the proposals carefully and understand the effect any change could have before decisions are made.

Labour had 52 years running this council. They cannot approve a review, leave the financial problems for someone else to deal with, and then present themselves as outraged by the fact that a consultation is taking place. That is political opportunism at its worst.

I stand with Councillor Matthew Caton in asking for an honest debate. Families need clear information and a chance to be heard, not Labour trying to turn their anxiety into a campaign leaflet.

A huge well done to our councillor team, who have collectively raised over £4,000 for our chosen charities! 👏

I was proud to raise money for Focusing Minds CIC in Ossett. Thank you to everyone who donated and supported us. It’s brilliant to see what we can achieve together for causes that matter to our communities.
