The Dublin Agreement.

Pro-EU people always try and claim the illegal migration crisis is because of Brexit, and that it can’t be dealt with because the UK left the EU’s Dublin Agreement. Lets look at the facts.

In the last 2 full years the UK was a member of the EU, 2018 and 2019, there were 13,377 and 16,531 illegal entries into Britain respectively. And under the Dublin regulation, the UK had just 209 and 263 migrants transferred out of the country in these years.

By contrast, 1,215 and 714 migrants were brought into the UK under the Dublin regulation in these years.

So in other words, the Dublin agreement provided a net increase of asylum seekers arriving in the UK in these years.

The facts are clear. The Dublin agreement was not the answer. Do not let the establishment gaslight you that Brexit is the reason for the illegal migration crisis.

This is absolutely staggering.

The Home Office has now produced official guidance for asylum seekers explaining that:

• Men and women have equal rights.
• Both people must consent to s*x.
• S*x with someone under 16 is illegal.
• Child abuse is a serious crime.
• Female ge***al mutilation is illegal.
• Domestic abuse, s*xual harassment and r**e are crimes.

These are not complicated British customs or obscure bits of legislation. These are some of the most basic standards of law, safety and human decency.

Of course people arriving in Britain should be told clearly what our laws are. But if the Government believes it is necessary to explain, in these elementary terms, that you must not r**e someone, s*xually abuse a child or mutilate a girl’s ge***als, then surely the public is entitled to ask some very serious questions. For clarity, these posters form part of a wider package of Home Office guidance on UK laws, rights and expected standards of behaviour for asylum seekers.

A leaflet is not a safeguarding strategy.

Britain should be absolutely unapologetic about its standards. Anyone coming here is expected to respect our laws, respect women, protect children and behave lawfully. Those who commit serious crimes should face the full force of the criminal justice system, alongside whatever immigration consequences the law permits.

We need secure borders, proper enforcement and confidence that those allowed to remain in this country understand and respect the values and laws that protect all of us.

The bar for living peacefully in Britain cannot simply be: “Here is a poster telling you not to r**e, abuse children or commit FGM.”

The British public deserves better than this.

A brilliant local event coming up at Ossett Cricket Club on Sunday 30th August, from 1pm until late!

Boundary Beats will feature live music, street food, craft stalls and family entertainment, with tickets starting from just £4.

Ossett Cricket Club is an important and hugely beneficial part of our community, providing sporting opportunities, bringing people together and giving local people a place to meet, socialise and get involved.

Events like this are a great way to support the club while enjoying a fantastic day out right here in Ossett.

I’m pleased to see Wakefield Express write an article about the work going on with Paint Gawthorpe Water Tower/Gawthorpe Water Tower Centenary Project to renovate and save Gawthorpe Water Tower. The tower is an important piece of the Ossett and Gawthorpe skyline and a lovely heritage asset. I hope the publicity can put pressure on Yorkshire Water to give it the attention it deserves.

Last night, Cllr Nick Farmer, Mayor Brian Moorhouse and I visited Ossett Flying Horse Bowling Club, accompanied by Wakefield Council’s Neighbourhood Coordinator, Lauren Firth.

We were pleased to present the club with a £2,000 grant to help support the running of this fantastic local community group.

The grant was approved by all three Ossett councillors, and we’re proud to be able to support organisations like the Flying Horse Bowling Club that bring people together and play such an important role in our community.

A big thank you to everyone at the club for the warm welcome and for everything you do locally 👏🏻🩵

🌳 Have your say on our local parks and green spaces

Wakefield Council is asking residents what they enjoy about their local parks and, importantly, what could be improved.

Last year’s feedback helped influence improvements including more seating, bins, signage and biodiversity measures. This is another opportunity to make sure local voices are heard when future priorities are being considered.

A huge thank you to everyone who follows this page, engages with my posts and takes an interest in what’s happening across Ossett, Gawthorpe and the wider Wakefield district.

Being in public life inevitably comes with criticism. Some of it is fair and constructive; some of it, unfortunately, crosses the line into horrible comments and personal abuse.

But it doesn’t deter me. If anything, it makes me more determined to keep getting out there, listening to residents, raising issues and doing what I can to make Ossett and Wakefield better places to live.

We won’t always agree and that’s absolutely fine. What matters is being accessible, getting things done and standing up for the communities I was elected to represent.

On Friday evening, Mayor Brian Moorhouse and I visited Ossett Sea Cadets to see the fantastic work that has gone into renovating their building and turning it into a safe, welcoming and usable space for young people aged 9–18.

One thing I hadn’t appreciated before the visit is that each Sea Cadet unit operates as its own charity, rather than simply being funded by the Royal Navy. That means local units have to work incredibly hard to raise the money needed to maintain their facilities and provide opportunities for their cadets.

The staff and volunteers at Ossett do a brilliant job, giving young people the chance to build confidence, learn new skills, develop discipline and teamwork, and get involved in something positive.

Brian and I are going to look at how we can support them with access to grant funding, as well as helping them become even more involved in the wider Ossett community.

A really worthwhile visit and a great example of people giving their time to support the next generation. ⚓
