Putney Conservatives will not support any bid that does not reopen Hammersmith Bridge to all modes of transport.

In 2019, Fleur Anderson MP campaigned in Putney on a platform that national government should foot the bill for repairing Hammersmith Bridge.

Seven years on, Labour run every level of government - Hammersmith and Fulham Council, City Hall, and national government - so if Labour wanted to reopen the bridge to vehicles and emergency services, they could.

Putney’s Labour MP has been in post since 2019, and now the Labour Party run every level of government who can find the £300 million needed for a full repair for vehicles: H&F Council, City Hall and the Department of Transport/UK government. If Labour really wanted to reopen the bridge, they could get it done.

Instead, millions will be wasted on expensive gimmicks like No 10 in the North when we can’t find money to repair a bridge that is a vital artery for London’s traffic. Calling for the bridge to be reopened when you’re in power is not good enough.

The West London council confirmed that it was now focusing on keeping the bridge open for cyclists, pedestrians and river traffic
