Fostering often starts with a simple realisation:

"I'd never thought about that before."

Many foster carers say nobody ever suggested fostering to them. It wasn't that they weren't suitable. The idea had simply never crossed their path at the right time.

Perhaps that's why you're reading this today.

Foster carers come from all walks of life, and there is no single type of person we're looking for.

You don't need someone else to tell you that you could foster.

If you've ever wondered whether you might have something to offer a child, we'd love to talk.

Sometimes the people who make great foster carers are the people who never imagined it was an option.

🎭 Through the Imagination Spaces programme, Surrey Libraries welcomed theatre shows, creative workshops, artists, exhibitions and family experiences into library spaces across the county.

These activities helped libraries become places where children and adults could discover new interests, explore their creativity and connect with others through shared cultural experiences.

For foster families and care-experienced children, imaginative play, storytelling and creative expression can be powerful ways to build confidence, develop friendships and explore new ideas.

Whether through a story, a performance, an art workshop or a creative activity, libraries help bring imagination to life.

Z is for Zip Wire and other things

Fostering is about much more than providing a safe place to live. From zip wires and theme parks to beach days, cinema trips, after-school clubs and family holidays, foster carers help children enjoy the experiences that make up a happy childhood. These opportunities help children build confidence, develop new skills, create positive memories and discover what they enjoy.
Sometimes, it's the ordinary moments and exciting adventures alike that make the biggest difference.

Y is for (Surrey) Youth Voice

Surrey Youth Voice gives children and young people with care experience the opportunity to speak up about the issues that matter to them. By sharing their views, ideas and experiences, young people help influence decisions, improve services and shape the support available to current and future generations of children in care.
Listening to young people is a vital part of fostering, ensuring their voices are heard, respected and acted upon.

X is for Xennial

Many of our foster carers fall within the Xennial age range, often bringing a wealth of life experience, stability and understanding to the role. If you're in your 40s or approaching 50, fostering could be a great fit for this stage of life. However, there is no "perfect" age to foster, and we are happy to talk to anyone aged 21 and over who would like to learn more.

Whether you're raising teenagers, have adult children, or have never had children of your own, fostering may be more achievable than you think.

W is for Wellbeing

Wellbeing is at the heart of fostering. Foster carers help children and young people feel safe, valued and supported, while also recognising the importance of looking after their own wellbeing. In Surrey, foster families can access a range of support services, including help from Mindworks Surrey, which provides emotional wellbeing and mental health support for children and young people.

By supporting wellbeing, foster carers help children build confidence, resilience and the foundations they need to thrive.

Being unsure doesn't mean fostering isn't for you.

In fact, uncertainty is often where the journey starts.

Most foster carers didn't wake up one morning knowing exactly what they wanted to do. They asked questions, attended an information event, spoke to a fostering team and explored their options.

You don't have to make a decision today.

If you're interested, curious or simply wondering whether fostering could fit into your life, that's enough reason to start the conversation.

You don't need certainty to enquire. Just curiosity.

πŸ“š Across Surrey, many libraries offer rooms and meeting spaces that can be hired for study sessions, community groups, workshops, business meetings, support groups, celebrations and local events.

For foster families, community groups and local organisations, these welcoming spaces can provide opportunities to connect, learn, share ideas and build relationships close to home.

Whether you're looking for a quiet place to study, somewhere to host a book club, or a venue for your next community event, there could be a library space near you.

V is for (Independent) Visitor Service

The Independent Visitor Service helps children and young people in care build a positive relationship with a trusted adult volunteer. Independent Visitors spend time with young people, take part in activities, listen, encourage and provide a consistent presence in their lives. For some children, this can be an important long-term friendship that helps boost confidence, wellbeing and a sense of belonging.
