Our foxes and other carnivores eat an awful lot but that doesn't mean we will give them rubbish!

Meat is what they are born to eat to enable them to thrive and live as long and as healthily as possible. 🤞

This is called a 'species appropriate diet'
This goes for your dogs and cats too!

They are all obligate carnivores which means they lack the long digestive systems required to properly process plant matter and rely solely on animal proteins to survive.

And just like your cats and dogs, having them on a raw diet has an added bonus for us and makes our work easier too!!

Because this food is matched closely to what they would eat out in nature, they are able to easily absorb all the natural nutrients, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids found in raw meat. This in turn means they produce a lot less waste as their bodies absorb pretty much all of the food as it's all goodness for them! No junk!

These essentials are normally destroyed in the kibble making process because of high temperatures and the high pressure extrusion process to make it shelf stable and cheap to make. Manufacturers then spray on chemical vitamins to make the products meet basic UK pet food standards.

So have you ever wondered why your dog or cat is pooping and tooting so much?! And why do they smell SO bad?! 🤢🤮💩

Take a look at the ingredient list on the food you feed them...

Most kibble is made from high carbohydrate cereal by-products, such as maize, wheat, soy, barley and sorghum.
Basically, whichever ingredient is cheapest on the day of production.

Carnivores simply can't process these types of ingredients and along with a meat/protein content lower than 70% (most cheap kibbles are shockingly lower than 10%) it all gets pumped out the other end as their bodies can not use these ingredients at all... So endless poo picking for owners... 🤢🤮 Gross ahy?!

It's a bit like us living on fast food or ping meals, even though we are not carnivores, it's just the same...

Yes we will survive on fast food and junk, but we won't feel great, we won't be healthy, our energy and concentration levels will be poor, our teeth will rot and fall out, we will develop serious health problems and we probably won't live as long as we could have on a nutrient dense, high variety, fresh balanced diet.

And nobody wants that... 🙏🤞

Everyone needs help sometimes... meet the unsung heroes of our ecosystem... 💚

These baby rats were discovered in a compost heap along with their deceased mother. 💔

Their eyes barely open and already orphaned...🥺

We know all too well about the controversial subject rats pose, some people love them, some people hate them.
They are the marmite of the wild world!

At the end of the day, they are wildlife, they are living creatures that needed help and as most of you know by now, we won't shy away from ANY animal, no matter what their size or what species they happen to be.

These little guys were raised to adulthood by us and safely released on our own land. 🙂

Rats do play an important role in keeping the balance in a wild setting.

They aerate the soil when they dig, they help disperse seeds, they clear up decaying organic matter and of course, they are a primary food source for many animals like owls, kestrels, hawks, red kits, foxes and lots of other wild predators who rely on them, all of which we have in abundance here at Wild Surrey HQ. 🥰

Now we are not expecting you to invite rats into your home in order to protect them, far from it!
We know they can be a real pain in urban areas but you can take simple steps in order to manage them but in a kind way. 🙏💚

We humans are notoriously messy creatures, which rats are naturally attracted to, so by simply removing food attractants, keeping areas clean and clutter free, use pest proof bird feeders and seal up entry points by blocking small gaps in sheds etc this can really help to ask them politely not to put up home near yours.

Growing natural deterrent plants like peppermint, elderberry or garlic can also help as naturally rats dislike these smells.

Every creature has a purpose in natures intricate web, let's choose understanding and kindness over hate and discrimination.

Protecting our ecosystem means protecting the food chain and every species within it 🙂🙏💚

HOG-NAPPED!!

This is Perrywinkle.
We attended a call for help to a hedgehog that had been found and picked up with reports of limping and smelling of death.

We took Perrywinkle back to base to thoroughly assess her condition before taking her to our vet.

Thankfully all her legs were fine, no limp found, feet, toes and joints all in good order. 🎉

We moved on to the report of smelling like death. Never a good sign as this generally means there could be an old wound somewhere that is heavily infected.

Thankfully, no wounds on her and she was smelling like a healthy hog should 🎉

Another win for Perrywinkle! 🩷

She was a really good weight, eating and drinking like a horse! We suspect she could be pregnant so after a couple of days of obs, she was given the all clear to go back home to her lovely finder so she can nest and get on with being a new mum!

So a simple case of innocent hognapping, which is always a great outcome for the patient and us!

We would always prefer to see and examine any animal in question rather than assume all is well as animals hide injuries and sickness so well, and for Perrywinkle, she had the full "hotel hog" treatment and certainly made the most of the all you can eat buffet here at Wild Surrey Wildlife Rescue Hog Hospital! 🤣🥰

We would like to thank her finder, who is very relieved that she is in tip top condition after all 🎉🥰🫶

Perrywinkle must have gotten the word out about our 'all you can eat' buffet as we had several other hedgehogs come in, in the days after her release!

It's been a bird kind of week.... and they still keep coming... mostly from Horley strangely!?!

With the huge change in weather this week, the birds have taken a hammering.

Chicks jumping or booting each other out from their nests, trying to get away from the heat, to fledglings coming a cropper with these sudden cold blustery rain storms.

Here is just a handful of the beauties we have rescued over the past few days.

Thank you to all the vets, members of public and businesses that have been these birds heros 💚

And a very special thank you goes out to our dedicated fosterer who takes in these tiny hatchlings and nestlings and raises them to adults for us.

It's a demanding and skilled job with lots of heartache mixed in, one that we just can't do ourselves as we continue to respond to emergency call outs and are on the road for long hours at a time.

We can't take them with us as they need constant warmth, consistent feeding and, in all essence, a surrogate mum who can dedicate a lot of time to them alone, plus for obvious welfare issues, it's just not right to be dragging them out with us, so it's a literal god send for us to have such dedicated fosterers, giving these tiny babies a second chance at becoming adults 🙏🫶

We would not be able to take these babies in at all without them, so give them a huge thank you on this post everyone!

This beautiful rabbit was found in distress.

He had huge bite marks over his hind quarters resulting in a catastrophic spinal injury.

Sadly, even being a stones throw away from where he was found, he died on route as we rushed him to the vets.

We would like to thank his finders for doing everything possible to try and help. 🤍🪽

⚠️☠️ Poisoning in Reigate ☠️⚠️

Our 4th call of the morning was to a collapsed fox cub that had been found on Reigate High Street.

Thankfully she was picked up by a lovely member of the public and taken out of the heat and sun as by 8am it was already so hot.

Upon arrival we assessed the cub and immediately found that she was showing advanced signs of poisoning.
She was in so much pain her little legs were locked ridged and any movement was absolute agony for her.

There is no cure for poisoning once it's in their system. 💔

We rushed her to one of our amazing vets just a mile away where they quickly jumped into action to peacefully put this little baby to sleep.

This little fox cub was just starting her life, otherwise perfectly healthy and growing beautifully.

Poisoning is a slow and extremely painful death.
It can take up to 10 days to finally kill its victim, as the organs fail and are slowly dissolved to liquid while they are still alive.

Please do not use poison.
It's inhumane, indiscriminate and doesn't kill only the target species, it carries on killing up the food chain, including pets like dogs and cats if they were to pick up a poisoned rat or mouse.

She did not deserve to die. 💔😭

People of Reigate, please keep a look out for more cubs and adult foxes in the area.
We are unsure if this little one picked up the poison herself as she was old enough to start wandering about a little on her own or if a parent has unknowingly brought it back to the den. There could be more cubs and foxes suffering the same fate 🥺🙏

The signs of poisoning are the same for all animals.
If you think your dog or cat has been poisoned you need to rush them to your nearest vet as a matter of urgency! If in any doubt whatsoever take them anyway!

Although it can take up to 10 days or more to kill, organ damage is being done from day 1 so it is time critical 🙏

Rest in peace now little one

If it's a bird that's feathered, please contact us first before taking action. 🐦

If it's a bird that's naked and/or has eyes shut and you are unable to place it safely back in the nest, please scoop up to safety.🐣

If any animals are in immediate danger, eg: in the road, out in the open, in full sun and exposed or are clearly injured or unwell please rescue scoop and bring inside if safe to do so!

Please do not attempt this with large animals unless experienced 🙏🙂

Also please do not attempt to feed or water any wildlife casualty or orphan.
Your kindest can kill 🙏🙂
