Happy Wednesday! After all this sun, we could do with a feast or two and so we think it’s time to shine a spotlight on Scolland’s Hall 📣
Scolland’s Hall is perhaps the most underrated spot at Richmond Castle!
The heart of the castle, Scolland’s Hall was home to feasting, celebration and the lavish lifestyle of the wealthy. It is the centre of the palatial complex and one of the best preserved 11th century halls in Europe 🏰
The hall is named after a man called Scolland. He was the steward of the castle and the naming is likely due to the amount of time he spent roaming these very grounds!
Stewards were important figures in castles as they managed the owner’s accounts and most of the money and resources entering the castle. Scolland is also known for being the lord of nearby Bedale - a title his descendants carried on past him. All this to say between his title and his job, Scolland was one important person!
Today Scolland’s Hall is still a massive part of the ruins of the castle, if you’ve ever visited us you’ll know it’s easily recognisable and a true hidden gem of the site ✨
